Going without the USB hub
Going without the USB hub
So I don't care about having extra USB ports inside for Bluetooth or anything, but I am using the Teensy, and I do want an external USB port.
Is there a way I can accomplish that without the hub or am I going to be necessary in order to keep those features?

Re: Going without the USB hub
Not that I know of. :\ If you look at the back of the pi, PP22 and PP23 are the USB data pads you can use (D- and D+) for the one USB port. That's all it has, though, if you want to add more you need a hub.hencethus wrote:So I don't care about having extra USB ports inside for Bluetooth or anything, but I am using the Teensy, and I do want an external USB port.

Hm. Alright. I guess I'll have to either abandon the Teensy in favor of GPIO input or bite the bullet and add a USB hub. I found this tiny USB hub board made for DIY projects like this, but it's 30 bucks plus like 20 bucks shipping to the US, so not really a viable option: http://www.yoctopuce.com/EN/products/micro-usb-hub-v2 Really cool though. I'll keep looking. If I'm going to add a hub I'd like it to be really minimal.
Re: Going without the USB hub
Right, the only way to have another usb port while using the teensy is by using a hub, also keep in mind if you are using a usb sound card that is another usb port you will need. The gpio + usb sound card is an option but you wont have any external usb without a hub still. Also keep in mind it's pretty useful to have a hub when setting everything up, if you need internet for any reason and you don't have a hub you have to unplug the keyboard to use the internet and that leaves you without a keyboard. This is the problem I ran into with my project since I have a cheapo usb hub which doesn't allow me to have more than one peripheral hooked up at a time for some reason.

Re: Going without the USB hub
There are way cheaper alternatives than the $50 hub. I'll post a couple after work. Hopefully, I am even getting a new one in the mail today and will get some pictures of it posted here. You should be spending a max of $15 on that hub, and that is still more than I would pay.hencethus wrote:Hm. Alright. So if I were only using the Teensy and no Bluetooth, external USB, or USB sound card, would I still need to get the USB hub for any reason?

I don't think you would, no.HavocShot wrote:So if I were only using the Teensy and no Bluetooth, external USB, or USB sound card, would I still need to get the USB hub for any reason?
The RPi0 has got 1 USB Port, covering your teensy.
No gamepad, no keyboard, no USB Sound, no WiFi.
If this is okay for you, and i did not miss something, i think there is no reason for a USB Hub.

Re: Going without the USB hub
Here's a question that could work around the hub while using the Teensy or similar: Is it possible to hard wire the Teensy to the Pi using the pads, leaving the USB port free to be the external port? I can't see why that wouldn't work but I'm still pretty new to fiddling with electronics. What would the advantages and disavantages be, if any?
