Hi there. Any updates to your fibre optic solution? I am just about to start the build and have the same issue. I'd prefer to have the status leds visible...

I desoldered the powerboost on-board LEDs what is maybe not necessary but I did it for keep a clear logic current flow and I added new LEDs in a blank game cartridge by connecting them by wire to the desoldered pads on the powerboost board. I used some 3mm flat head LEDs.

I left the PB led in place and solder a wire with another led to the top of the game cart. Be careful the voltage on the led though, I have some 3.1 and some 2.2 and only the lower volt leds will light up.

I’m actually doing fiber on my build and it works pretty good (in test so far). It allows me to bring the leds from the powerboost, mounted in back, to the front of the case just under the power switch ( ! ) not the top or cart, and there’s no soldering. I’m hoping to have that bit installed this weekend so I’ll post a pic when I have it

edit: attached a demo pic:

LEDs are generally bright enough that you can position them in the case right up to the plastic and it will shine through the plastic, no need for extra case mods. (See @rodocop most recent build for what this will look like)

Veteran gamer has a good example of how to do extra LEDs coming off your power boost. You can just attach a power and a ground wire from the powerboost and connect them to a LED and you're on business.

Yeah, I’ve tried both other approaches.. soldering leds in is pretty easy, since you don’t have to desolder the onboard ones for it to work, if you have space to put them. Shining the light thru the case is ok too. Worked pretty well on the white case I used, with the powerboost mounted at the top, but I don’t think it would have on the black one. I really liked having them right on the front. There are some downsides/frustrations, tho. The cables get stiff and brittle when exposed to heat (ie hot glue). If you don’t mask the light source with something the light can still bleeds into the case.
