Gameboy Build Guides?

Post by PiToTheFri » Wed Jul 03, 2019 5:00 pm

First time post. I was instructed to come here as suppoedly it's the best place to ask. To try and keep it short I've been thinking about building an emulating device more specifically and hence the title a gameboy. Now here in lies my questions. I have NEVER undertaken a project like this before I know little to nothing about Raspberry Pi nor how to use or construct such a device. Nor have I ever soldered before. I don't think that the constructing will be the hard part for me that seems quite easy as I have experience with piecing a PC from scratch with the parts you buy, although constructing already built parts and having to solder built parts together are somewhat different. With that being said I would need a guide of course to tell me what I need to solder to what, etc. I would preference guides using images or containing images as I find learning from scratch far more easy when doing it visually. I'm also looking to preference Pi 3 B+/A+ unless I can be persuaded with reasons to pick something else. Also I'm not quite sure on what parts I should pick and the reasons why. Lastly I think the real struggle will be with the software end of it, installing, configuring etc. I would be and am extremely grateful for help that is offered from others to help inform me and helping me learn new skills, not only because you're spending your time to communicate with me but because you're sharing your experiences with me. So I thank you.

Thank you.

Firstly, welcome! You'll find a lot of great advice and knowledge sharing here. In fact, there's a whole part of the forum dedicated to guides:

Here's a really great guide by abrugsch specifically dealing with soldering for people like you and me who don't have a whole lot of experience with it:
https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1984

Personally, I'm using wermy's GBZ build guide from way back. There's a handful of different build setups you can use, but this one is very well-documented and seems appropriate for my first project of this type.

You also mention getting started with a Raspberry Pi. I haven't set mine up just yet, but there's lots of guides around the internet that can help. A lot of projects use RetroPie, so here's a couple of leads to get you started:
RetroPie documentation
RetroPie setup guide

Finally, as a piece of advice, it's highly recommended to do a search on the forums (and the internet in general) when you need help with anything specific. There's a pretty decent chance that, whatever your problem is, someone here has encountered it before or has offered someone else advice that can help you.

Good luck with your project! Do keep us posted on how it goes.
