As @chaosratt suggested, if someone can provide the writing from the top of the two 8-pin chips, we can look up the datasheets and find out how to bypass the voltage regulator.

They're really hard to read but I manged to snap some photos
The one near the large capacitor is A5269 BM56AC .

well if all else fails, you can always get a 5v to 12v dc to dc boost converter. wont be as power efficient but it should get the job done.

Use a jumper or solder the red wire to pin 3 of the A5269 chip.

That is connected to the output, so it should work. Don't blame me if you burn your house down though.

:)

That's what I was guessing after reading the spec sheet. It will be fun to solder the tiny pin :S

I soldered the wire to pin 3. I'm pretty sure I killed it. I'll try a few more things tomorrow

I have the same Display, you need to connect your 5V to Pin 2 of the A5269 Voltage Regulator. Pin Number 3 ist the 3,3V output of the Voltage Regulator unfortunately that means you killed the whole board
Here is a picture how i connected the Voltage Regulator:

I'll fiddle around with it when I can, but you're right, the board is probably dead.

Thanks for the info.
