Charging/battery question

I’m making a very simple GBZ for my grandpa. He only wants to play Tetris but would benefit from the bigger/backlit screen and familiar controls.

I’m trying to keep things as simple as possible so:

- Does anyone have experience doing a build where the original barrel connecter is used for charging?

- Does anyone have experience keeping the original battery enclosure and using rechargeable AA size batteries?
