Red hot pi, normal?

Post by Lpoolm » Mon Sep 19, 2016 12:27 pm

So I am on my second build, using the cheaper options for this one, maybe why I'm struggling?
Anyway finally managed to get the banggood power boost set up (with a lot of help), wired up the screen, pi and USB had it running for about 30/40mins yesterday but noticed the pi was so hot, probably too hot to touch? The powerboost was hot too.
It was like this and the case was open so closed it will probably be worse?
My wermy build doesn't get this hot.
Does anyone else have this issue, not sure if it's the banggood power boost?
Any feedback would be great.

i am using the power boost from banggood, but have not had it turned on for more than 10 minutes. Case was open, but everything felt pretty cool to me....

but next time i'll try to see if it gets hot if i use it longer

Were you trying to play and charge at the same time?

I think I had quake running while it was plugged in.
Is this a no no?

It's possible for that board to be plugged in charging the battery while playing but I wouldn't recommend it. I think this is why it's getting very hot. It will reduce it's lifespan considerably as heat is usually what kills electronics.

Thanks for that. I have only just got the power set up on it so will try it without being plugged in and also plugged in and off, hopefully it will not go red hot again :D

sorry to bump this old post but i lost the love for a few months due to frustrations but now im trying to get back into it! :D
so my pi is set up to a banggood powerboost the same as in the following thread
http://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1715
i start it up and leave it on the home screen and the pi gets hot within minutes. when i have the quake demo running almost within minutes the red box comes on in the corner than eventually it shuts down?
When i take the pi out of the gameboy and have it next to it its still hot but no red box (yet)
I have tried thicker wires from the powerstrip to the pi and the only other wires coming from the pi are the two audio leads (before that i had the screen and usb wired direct to pi?)
This is the second pi i have tried and same issue, my only other alternative is to try another powerboost unless someone has any other ideas?
as previously mentioned i am running this from the battery, it is not plugged in and on, just a fully charged battery.
any ideas would be great thanks.

Have you tried just powering the pi with a regular usb psu? Have you doublechecked all your wiring that there isn't a short somewhere? Try simplifying the circuits down to just the bare essentials. With everything external where possible i.e. Just the power, the pi, a usb controller and a display etc. Try to take as many problem avenues out of the equation and build back up from there

yes sorry, forgot to mention that. i powered both pi's up with just them plugged in and into the tv before3 connecting up both ran fine which is making me think it is linked to the powerboost?
thanks for the suggestions.
