Hello All! I'm attempting my first build and decided not to use an AIO board, but I'm struggling with figuring out what I actually need. So far I've bought a case, a Pi Zero, a four button controller PCB (http://www.ebay.com/itm/361672717529), and one of the BW screens off Amazon. But besides that, I'm kind of lost. There's so many different versions people are building, I find it hard to figure out what is necessary, and what is optional. So if anyone could give me a helping hand and direct me to some of the stuff you guys used in your builds, I would really appreciate it! For reference, I`m aiming to build a fairly basic four button, two trigger DMG build.

You will also need a battery, charger (PowerBoost 1000C or the banggood one), power switch, wires, speaker, headphone socket (if using), stereo or mono amplifier and probably more that I have forgotten.

Check out some other builds people have done in the show off corner. They normally include a parts list at the top of most builds. This will give u a rough idea of what you need, then create your own list based on your gameboy zero design.

Would I need a board like the Teensy LC for button mapping?

Yes from what I understand you should

You don't need a teensy. You can wire the buttons directly to the GPIO. This is what I did on my first build. I think there is a guide how to do it in the hardware guide section.

So this is what I have so far. What I'm really struggling with now is the audio components. I'm pretty clueless with that, and seeing as I'm not using an AIO, it looks like I'm doing things the hard way. Prices are in Canadian Dollars and include shipping and everything. Any pointers for audio components?

I've seen a couple guides, but I figured I would just go the Teensy route. Fingers crossed it works out well!

I would suggest going the usb audio route. This is what i did in my first build. It takes a little bit of code to set it up (theres a guide on the forums for retropie 3.8) but i found it was loud enough without having to wire up a amp or low pass filter.
