MAME Control Config- Helder PCB

All,
I was wondering if anyone has been able to get Helder's All-In-One PCB to work with MAME on the Gameboy Zero. I have been trying to edit the config file for the MAME-FOR-ALL emulator and was unsuccessful with getting the custom pcb to work correctly.
It works perfectly for all the other emulators that use the RETROARCH.CFG file to run the controls however, when I load MAME-FOR-ALL with a test game like metal slug, and I try to edit the GEN-Inputs I am only able to map the Start and Select buttons correctly. Pressing the up,down, left, right buttons for Player 1 controls does absolutely nothing to register my button presses.
I also tried to run an xbox controller off of the hubs on the back of his board and their buttons are registering either; my keyboard presses do however.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! I finally got the BIOS to work so all my games run like Tekken, Metal Slug, etc, but now my biggest hurdle are the MAME controls!
