Whitch screen is easiest to use July 2017

Post by onesojourner » Thu Jul 06, 2017 6:06 pm

Guys what screens are you having the most luck with right now? I have tried a couple of amazon screens and they are super picky about voltage and signal. Sometimes they will work sometimes they wont.

If you are a beginner, like I am/was, it might be worth it to buy the same screen wermy used from Adafruit, even though it is a lot more expensive. Make sure you don't mess up like I did, or you may end up calling for help or buying a new one. You can pick up one of the many BW screens on Amazon and convert it using guides from the forum and wiki.

However, I have heard that a screen from Gearbest may work without any conversion, but I'm not sure. Check the screen page on the wiki.

Good luck!

If you post the pics of the pcb we could help. Also if you have a multimeter post a pic with voltages on ICs and it would be lot easier to convert

Can confirm that all screen's ive had from Gearbest do not need any 5v modification and look sharp and crisp compared to other variants.

Additionally the controller board is fairly small and easy to work with.

I bought two of these BW screens from Amazon and both works just fine.

And another one from Aliexpress which is better than the two BW Screens. Consumes less current and works with 5V out of the box.

The 5v mod on all these screens are very easy.

Better as in video quality ? Aren't they all at the same resolution ? Would you happen to have a picture for comparison because all I use are the car monitors. If the other has better definition then I need to switch haha

All the same crappy resolution. :) But the one i bought from Aliexpress is just a little better in picture quality. Maybe it was just set at the right setting since it didn't come with a controller unlike the BW screens i have that has brightness/menu controller. Hardly noticeable though.

Another thing i noticed on the BW screens:
- the AMT630 chip gets very hot. Does not happen on the aliexpress screen.
- the lcd screen gets warm hot too but not too much on the aliexpress screen.
- Consumes more power than the aliexpress screen. I tested both using a 5V power supply and BW screens uses 0.420 amp while the aliexpress uses only 0.300 amp.

@zeroboy The AMT630 chip is 3.3v and the IC in the board without controller buttons (Aliexpress) is 5v. So AMT630 will get a lot hot and might burnout. What i did was to get a 3.3v regulator from adafruit and use that. You can even use the 3.3v from the Pi you are using. My display uses AMT630 and the chip doesnt heat up at all

Both of the screens i have use the AMT630 chip and can use 3.3v. Do you have a picture of the lcd board you have?
