Unfortunately I don't have a gameboy shell to test this on at the moment, but when I get back home near the end of the month I will print this out and test it with both a PSP and 3DS joystick to see how they work. It may be a possible improvement to add guide posts for the corner braces of these sticks.

I got my PSP1000 stick yesterday. If there's still demand I'll update the model as soon as I find the time.

old answerShow
I'd say that depends on the kind of AIO you are using. Does it have connections for an analog stick? And what do you mean by 'attach'? How to solder the connections or how to attach the stick to the shell?
edit: Sorry, I just realized I misread your post. You were asking how to do it without a board. Unfortunately I don't know the answer to that.

I wanted to do a joystick instead of dpad too...unfortunately I am a total noob have yet to finish my gameboy yet as I keep buying newer parts as they become available I imagine I need the digital to analog converter programming I accidentally bought a bag of what appears to be ps3 ps4 joysticks instead of psp joysticks. I also was toting with the 3.5" touchscreen as well

Yikes – I totally forgot about this thread! :? Sorry!

If anyone is still interested in replacing the D-pad with a thumbstick, I uploaded a different design here.
