First project

Post by Sendoushi » Fri Jan 19, 2018 4:50 am

Hey guys.

I'm starting my first Game Boy Pi project. I'm a complete newbie on these matters and I would like some opinions. I want to keep it cheap, specially since it is my first project. I'm thinking either in Zero W or Pi3. The reason for Pi3 is that it is easy for me to get it here, Zero W sometimes is almost the same price (really?) which doesn't make much sense to me. Anyway we'll see what I can get cheap enough.

So, I don't want to use glue, that is a must. I would like to get the HDMI out and usbs on the case and such but... That might be asking too much of the first build. Maybe just access to the sd card and an usb for charging. Also thinking on a composite lcd because it seems to me easier than the HDMI lcd. Thinking on using those cheap pcb with the buttons layout. It will be harder for me because of sound amps and such but since I'm in Portugal it will be very hard to have a better solution (like the Kite one) and at least it is very cheap eheh. I might postpone audio though, I don't care that much about it and it will simplify the build. I already have some stuff like IDE cables and such laying around which I think i'll use for organization purposes.

I might rethink the audio thing to use it as a mp3 player but that might be too much of a stretch for a first project.

Found some 3d printing services around here which I might use with some community stl.

Where should I start then? What components should I get? What is your advice on starting with the project?

Here is what I gathered I'll need for now, feel free to comment on these. Ebay stuff because it is easier for me to buy around here:
- Case + buttons + PCB + Glass (http://www.ebay.es/itm/GameBoy-Zero-Kit ... 1438.l2649) around 40€ (i might get this cheaper if i buy separated but I might have an issue finding the glass)
- Pi Zero W (https://www.ebay.es/itm/Raspberry-Pi-Ze ... SwbP1aYUry) around 27€ (pi3 is around 40€ in a local store)

One tip dont buy the kit. Its expancive ass f.. You find cheaper parts if you look for the case and PCB. Whats out for the most pcb. There are from helder and look for the one with helder on it.
Whooo Stop befor ask in a post. First use the search or the wiki befor you make a topic.. Just saying.........

Since you're from Europe you might have the same import issues as I have. Where are you buying your parts and pcbs? Here in the forum? Yes that kit seems to be too much. The only thing I don't seem to find easily from the kit is the "glass".

Also, found this https://www.kubii.fr/fr/pi-zero-w/1851- ... 06997.html and this https://shop.pimoroni.com/products/raspberry-pi-zero-w which with shipment shouldn't go over 20€.

For starters, I suggest the Pi Zero/W.

Simple and cheap Pi Zero build:
- use a composite screen - https://www.gearbest.com/development-bo ... 29447.html
- use simple pcb board for GPIO buttons - around $5-$7 on ebay.

I'm currently selling two different boards in which you might be interested.
New! tinkerBOY PowerSwitch v1.0 with Safe Shutdown
Game Boy Zero Controllers available @ tinkerBOY.xyz * Support
tinkerBOY Controller v3.0 - built-in usb controller, usb audio, and usb hub
tinkerBOY Controller v2.0 - GPIO buttons and builtin PWM Audio and Amplifier
tinkerBOY Controller v1.1 - simple pcb button
* DPI Adapter - better display for GBZ
* keyboard converters - IBM XT/AT Soarer's Converter | ADB to USB Converter
