New Smaller Pi 3 A+

Post by RxBrad » Thu Nov 15, 2018 3:46 am

Pack it in Pi Zero. There's a new DMG sheriff in GBZ Town.

It's a Pi 3 B+, and adds...

-1.4GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU
-512MB LPDDR2 SDRAM
-Dual-band 802.11ac wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.2/BLE
-Improved USB mass-storage booting
-Improved thermal management

I'm interested to see if I can upgrade my Circuit Sword Lite to use one instead of the current zero... I have ordered a 3A+ (although I'm dreading trying to desolder the old one)

What's better for RetroPie and Emulation in general?
Pi 3 B
Quad-core 1.2ghz+1GB RAM
vs.
Pi 3 A+
Quad-core 1.4ghz+512MB RAM

Well... option C, the Pi 3B+ would be the best choice of all of them (has the specs of the 3A+ but with the extra memory of the 3B) although you would probably need to strip it down significantly for a GBZ project.

Although since games from most popular systems run fine on the Zero it doesn't make a huge amount of difference unless you want to play PSP / Dreamcast / N64 games and the like at which point you'll need all the power you can get your hands on.

Okay... so there is one drawback vs. the Pi Zero if using the Pi 3 A+ in a Game Boy Zero -- we're gonna need a bigger battery.

as well as a bigger battery.....
(Helder got you covered https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=6720 ;) )

maybe a decent power module is also not a bad idea...

(Helder... ring any bells.... )

but for me, the main concern is the heat this is going to generate when in use (heatsink and cooling might be a must too).....
as the Pi3 B+ isnt as cool as everyone might think (if you know what i mean)...
(its basically the same CPU, with just less RAM... )_

especially in a confined space as something like a DMG shell, or smaller.....

Definitely. I had to add a fan the the Pi3 I use to play games on my TV because it kept overheating & throttling. I'm sure this would have those same problems, but worse, in a DMG-type case.
