40 Pin DPI Display $10 Alternative

Post by GordoPie » Fri Dec 28, 2018 2:01 pm

From what I'm reading, DPI is the way to go as of right now due to its superior color, speed, etc. The screen I'm seeing reccomended over and over is a 40 pin TFT display available on AliExpress for less than $10

US $8.77 | 3.5" TFT LCD LQ035NC111 320 * 240 resolution

In my search for a good DPI adapter and screen I came across TinkerBoys website (awesome!) but the price of the dpi adapter USD $30+ would add quite a bit of cost to my build.

https://www.tinkerboy.xyz/product/tinke ... i-adapter/

So I wanted to look around for a less expensive alternative, which lead me to...

http://blog.reasonablycorrect.com/raw-dpi-raspberry-pi/

This guys build utilizes the 40 pin TFT Friend from AdaFruit USD $9.95.

https://www.adafruit.com/product/1932

It lacks the pi-hat form factor and ease of installation of TinkerBoys adapter but with a little more work, it seems like a much cheaper alternative for those on a budget. The ada fruit adapter even includes a backlight driver capable of up to 24 volts which should make larger screens possible.

To be clear - This isnt meant as a jab in any fashion to TinkerBoy, his products are premium and imho deserve their premium price but may be outside the financial reach of some so I just wanted to present a potential alternative.

I havent yet had a chance to test this out but hopefully this can help spread awareness and help someone out with their build.

Skeet, Skeet,

-Gordo

Great work Gordo....

but ONE major flaw in all this....

all the searching you did was completely in vain (unfortunately, but lessons will be learned)....

the 3.5" LCD screen thats used in the GBZ builds is a 54pin...
unlike a 4.3" screen which has 40pin and would go brilliantly with that adafruit adapter...
(its also perfect for a PSP build, but that for another post)

now if you actually did your research properly, apart from not noticing the difference of a 54pin to a 40pin
(this is not meant as a jab, just pointing out the obvious)

you would have come across several post in this actual forum, that cover this topic....
which have been posted for the help and awareness of anyone looking to build
(and by most that have already asked this very question)

heres a couple examples (that also explains the benefits of tinkerboy adapter)

https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 889#p67889
https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 889#p67979

(another good place to search is the other projects section)

Good luck with you build....
