It seems inexpensive...
the board that adafruit have wont work with the LQ035NC111 LCD....
as the 3.5" LCD has a 54pin ribbon and so needs a 54pin connector....

as for the DIY route....
there are a couple of download links in the post....

(both are pretty much the same, with just some tweaking to the designs)
it fairly straight forward....
download the zip files and extract....
you should have the design files as well as a list of the additional parts that are required (which need to be soldered on the board)
(have the board made from eiither Oshpark or any other PCB manufacturer, order the additional parts.... and put it all together)
but one thing to bear in mind....
if you just want one board....
then go for tinkerboy adapter

its there for a reason...
for people that don't want the hassle of build/making their own (or dont have the tools/experience)....
and only really want one board....
as the cost of doing it DIY, is going to be in the ball park (if not more, possibly less) of the ready made solution
(but you will have more than one.... anything from 3 to 10)
So I ordered PCB's from OSH Park and the components from Mouser. It works great, the colors are perfect, the text is clear but the screen itself keeps turning off and on over and over again.
I think I've narrowed it down to the LED driver IC FAN5333BSX. I've noticed it's getting REALLY hot after a short period of use, like within seconds of powering on the pi.
My guess it that its thermal shutdown is kicking on and off and that's why my screen keeps blinking off and on.
However, that's about as far as I've gotten. I cant seem to figure out why it's getting so hot, or is that normal and some sort of red herring and the blinking is being caused by something else.
I went back through and checked all of my soldering and I didnt see any bridges connections, I also checked my diode orientation accidentally confused D1 and D2 but I already corrected that and it's on point now.

this is the led driver you need use by tinker boy and othermod dont know the part number on top off my head send tinker boy a dm

That's a diode, dude. This is an LED driver and the ic I was referring to...

I’m so sorry I was on a bumpy train ride without my glasses. I had a similar heat problem when I made one of these I replace with this one problem solve

Ah no worries, thanks for the tip. Do you have a link to the data sheet or where I can purchase this driver? I've googled 1N6HJ but it just returns one relevant link but it's all in Chinese.

not really a great help in this department....
I'm still learning myself, and my basic knowledge might be a hindrance instead of helping....
but here goes...
if it is based on the adafruit 40pin helper....
the IC they use in theirs is this one....

not sure if it is going to be enough for the requirement of the LQ035NC111 (as I think it requires around 20V)
this could be the issue with yours (but I'm not sure).....
but as long as you can find a SOT-23-5 that is rated at around 20v, i think you should be ok (
)
I dont think it matters if it is 1N6HJ, if you having trouble finding it.....
but the one you have is rated at 20v (if its FAN5331), so i'm not sure why that isnt working (this is where my ignorance starts to show)
but ...
contacting Tinkerboy may be a good option,
or even someone like Kite
they've made these and will have better knowledge on this
.

Read the
FAN5333 datasheet. It says it's recommended to have a Zener diode for open-circuit protection. The diode you're using is too small and might be the reason why the fan5333 gets very hot when no load or no lcd is plugged. Look for Zener diode in sma package with atleast 24v rating. The fan5333 is also very picky on what inductor to use. Try the recommended parts on the datasheet.

which one did you use in your...
and can it be used in this application, as its for the same LCD

For the Zener diode
I tried all these diodes and they all work perfectly fine.
For the inductor just buy a
10uh and around 1A rated.
