Taming the Big Board (ON-AMT630A-3.5-V01) Screen

Post by RazorX » Thu Jul 07, 2016 9:27 am

hey guys I've seen a lot of people disappointed when they get there 3.5" screen open it up and see this:

well i thought i would take a look and see if just buying a new screen like some have done is the best option and im here to show you my results i hope you all find this helpful and don't feel so screwed when you get this.

first off lets tackle the initial test and please don't use the pi i know your thinking right now what the hell is this guy talking about, well lets take a look:
Image this is actually me running 5v to the screen without any modifications and it works
instead of hooking it upto the pi to test i hooked it upto my gamecube which i already had a composite lead for so i would recommend you test it on something other than the pi.

ok now we have got this far the next issue is of course the size, lets be honest this is not gonna fit in the gameboy case like this its just not worth it so what are my options you ask well let me show you:

Image
ok now it will fit :D but i suppose the question is now does it still work like that well lets see:
Image

the answer is yes :)
at this stage you will have also noticed there's no buttons anymore and you would be right and at this stage i haven't got them working again i wired them back up and gave it a quick test with no luck but i will see if i can sort that also i adjusted my settings before just incase so even if i fail to get them working again im not too concerned but it would be nice to have them working so i will look into it and post here if i get them working and how.

also here is a few pointers to help you:

1. the screen will not come on without a video signal (use supplied cable first).
2. AV1 and AV2 are exactly the same so it doesn't matter which one you use.
3. do the brightness and other options straight away.
4. test on something other than the pi initially at the original 12v if you can.
5. test with 5v without any modifications.
6. if your screen is working at 12v but not 5v then you will have to modify it in order to get it working there is plenty of info on how to do that.
7. if at some point you have detached the mainboard from the screen perhaps to modify it for 5v and when reconnecting and testing the screen no longer comes on don't jump to the conclusion you have broke it or it doesn't work at 5v this of course could be the issue but first check the flex cable that connects the screen to the board this happened to me and i checked the flex cable and inserted it further and nothing so naturally i was like shit whats going on and it turned out it was simply that i had put the flex cable in upside down since gluing the screen in place meant that the board needed to be upside down if inserting the flex cable at the top so look out for that.

i hope this helps you with your screen or screens in general as far as how to test them and what to look out for if it did please give this thread a thumbs up and enjoy making your gameboy zero :D

I do have the same board, just trimmed off the edges to fit in my gameboy, it works flawlessly.. Just be careful with the screen connector, misconnected it can do pretty weird stuff :)
