Doesn't short the pins in that way? It looks like passing the solder over it could bridge the pins easily. I'm just a beginner in soldering small things, so I will practise your technique thanks for the advice.

if you are using flux, the solder will typically flow nicely on to the pads. Obviously if there are shorts or bridges, you will clean them up after, since they will likely be visible.

If you try and do it without flux yes it will, get a flux pen and depress it so lots of flux comes out and drag the pen up and down the ribbon while its resting on the board and then drag the soldering tip across, i usually drag it back and forth the ribbon and then if any bridges apply more flux and drag outwards.
