day's GBZ

Post by day » Thu Aug 11, 2016 1:16 pm

Hello to all !

I'm starting to get my orders step by step !
So I think it's time to start showing off and provide any kind of help I can give.

I will also have questions during my build I am sure, so feel free to jump in if you have answers :)

So let's start !

Current Status :
Gathering all elements !

  • 1 replacement battery cover door from ebay
  • 1 3-D Printed Screw Bracket from @benoliver999 (here)
  • 1 custom cartridge label from @dominator (here)
  • 2x 3-D Printed button wells from @dominator
  • 1 custom screen protector from @dominator
  • 1 3.7V Li-Ion Battery Level Indicator from Aliexpress (here)
  • 1 TFT LCD 3.5" screen that should work in 5v with no mod (here)
  • 1 GBC transparent game cartridge from ebay, will need to cut the corner
  • 1 Raspberry Pi Zero from ThePiHut with WiFi Adapter (here)
  • 1 SanDisk Ultra MicroSDXC 64 Gb from amazon
  • 1 Adafruit Mono 2.5W Class D Audio Amplifier - PAM8302 from ebay
  • 1 Adafruit DRV2605L Haptic Motor Controller from ebay
  • 1 Adafruit Vibrating Mini Motor Disc from ebay
  • 1 Adafruit PowerBoost 1000 Charger from amazon
  • 1 JDL2010S Micro cooling fan DC 5V 0.1A 20mm from ebay (but I might use a heatsink that I will cut to 5x5mm for the PB1000C, idea of @Camble, and use this fan for the rest of the case)
  • 1 Mini speaker VISATON 3,2 cm (here)
  • 10x 5x7cm universal board prototyping pcb kit from ebay
  • 2x Tactile Push Button SPST 6 x 6 x 7.5 from ebay (still unsure if I use these or DMG replacement buttons or something else, like 3D printed L/R buttons)
  • 1 LED, Flat top, 3mm, Red from ebay
  • 1 DMG Replacement Buttons (Original Black and Maroon + Link Port) from deadpanrobot.co.uk
  • 1 DMG Replacement Conductive Silicone Pad Set from deadpanrobot.co.uk
  • 1 PCI Slot Cover Dust Brackets Proof Filter Blanking Plate Steel + 5x Screws from ebay
  • 1 Sabrent USB External Sound Adapter AU-MMSA USB-AUDD from amazon
  • 8x Solder Tabs from ebay
  • 4x 14500 3.7v batteries, they say 2300mAh, I doubt it...
  • 1 PVC Heat Shrink Tubing Wrap RC Battery Pack 17mm - 150mm from ebay
  • 10meter of 22 AWG red wire from ebay
  • 10meter of 22 AWG black wire from ebay
  • 1 Transistor NPN PN2222A from ebay
  • 1 Mini Slide Switch SPDT 2.0mm Pitch 2 Tap Position 3Pin from ebay
  • 1 Micro USB Interface Board from ebay

  • 1 PSP1000 Analog Joystick
Coming parts:
  • 1 GBZ All In One PCB (Pre Orders V2) from @Helder (here)
  • 1 PRS-TECH Micro SD Cart board with Advanced Filtering from @prerunnerseth (here)
  • 1 Potentiometer A10K from ebay
  • 1 Power Strip board from OSHpark from @Helder (here)
  • 1 JST-PH 2mm cable to connect source power to PB1000C
  • 6x New Battery Terminal Springs from ebay
  • 1 bottle of 1000ml Peroxyde 12% vol 40 from amazon
  • 1 3.7V Polymer Rechargeable Battery 2000mAh PCM 103450 from ebay
  • 1 Protection Circuit Module PCM for 3.6V 3.7V Li-Po Li-ion Battery from ebay
  • 1 Heatsink 14mmx14mmx5mm, to cut into 5x5x5 to put on the PB1000C
  • NOT YET ORDERED : 1 Gorilla Glass Screen Surround by incontrasttogray (here), if available, and if with custom surrounds like/by dominator
So as you can see, there is a lot to do !

Additions to original GBZ project:
I want to add a Graceful shutdown circuit following this guide from @Camble (here) even if I might buy his futur coming board (here, for another GBZ), an analog stick, a haptic vibror (with a way to turn it off), a status LED, a battery level indicator, a better sound speaker, a small fan, an aeration grid on top of the DMG, custom label cartridge and custom screen protector.
I will use the AIO board and the PRS-TECH cartridge to ease these steps.

Current blocker:
At the moment, I am thinking about the power source. I have several choices in mind, but I want to assess the risks prior to taking my decision.
I was considering four 14500 3.7v batteries. They claim to be 2300mAh, but as per wikipedia, 14500 can't be more than 800mAh.
Even if true, this would give 3200mAh, and fit in the original batteries emplacement, which is still nice.

However, I am not sure if four 14500 in parallel is 1- SAFE !!!, and 2- ok to work with a PB1000C, the Protection Circuit Module and the Battery Level Indicator.

On top of that, I don't want these cheap batteries to explode in my face. I was first thinking about soldering them to create a battery pack, (hence the PVC shrink tube and the solder tabs) as @razor did (see this amazing mod here), but I got scared, and decided to maybe go with what @Spleen21 did very nicely (see here), hence the battery terminal springs. But then again, I don't want these batteries to explode in my face.

So I am calling for advices on either a nice source of trusted supplier to buy : either four 14500 3.7v batteries that would give more than 3000mAh, or a great Lipo 3.7v with high mAh that would fit the GBZ, or another kind of batteries that would do the same (3.7v, high mAh, fit the GBZ)...

My main concern is safety. I am not sure what is feasible (parallel wiring or not) and compatible with my setup.

First things todo :
  • Cut the corner of the cartridge
  • Cut the DMG case to my needs
  • Try if screen works with not modification
  • Find a good source of power
  • start building !

More to come !

Thanks for reading :)

I was considering a haptic motor but was sure if it was worth doing. How are you driving the motor?
