Post by johweb » Sun Sep 04, 2016 5:30 am

Hello everybody.

First of all, I'm sorry if I make mistakes when trying to speak/write in english. Feel free to correct me when needed ! ;)

OK, let's talk about my project. As many of us, I want to build my own Gameboy/Pi.
This is the parts list I'll use (I'll update it as soon as possible) :

power strip from Helder
safe button switch from Camble
wheel potentiometer from an old pc cd-rom drive
headphone jack input from an old pc cd-rom drive
HDMI to VGA converter with audio output

2/ waiting for
a few more plastic buttons

First week-end to work on my build.
I had to play with my Dremel, to make place for the screen.

This screen fit almost perfect in the case, I'm happy !
But I had to remove screws support... The only two support left are the blue-colored on my picture... OK, first problem, I have to think about how to have a real nice close for the upper part of the case...
I'll think about it later, but if any idea, you're welcome !

Then, I just dropped the PRS-tech PCB and the screen PCB to see how everything fits...

I know I'll have to unsolder the white connectors. Anyway, the screen board fits well too in the case, but I may be in trouble later because it's hudge.

Before making more, I prefer to wait for some other parts, to see exactly wher I'm going...
;)

do you have a spare CD/DVD drive from an old, say WINDOWS 95/xp computer? i got my volume wheel from that AND a Headphone jack, desoldering stuff like that is easy and saves money

(im talking about one of these [LINK: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-CRX220A1-5 ... 2548.l4275] )

That's a really great idea ! I'll try to find this stuff, I may have that somewhere in my house...

And for closing the upper part of the case, I think I'll hot glue one of these :

Next work : next week-end... :!:

I don't think the hinge will work.

That hinge would only work if placed on the outside of the case.

Never mind, it was just an idea...
No update of my build because I wasn't home last week-end. I'll just update the received parts this week.

I've updated my parts list. I received the screen surround, the powerboost. I found an old cd-rom drive from wich I took the wheel potentiometer and the headphone jack input. I also received the battery, but it was too large for my project. So I bought a new one (part list is updated). The actually received one will be used to test and then, I'll use it on another project... :)

OK, I did a few more... I was very happy this week to receive my hdmi to vga converter.

First, I rounded the X and Y holes, for a better look, using this tool :

And this is how it looks now :

I 3D printed the button wells and it fits well ! (sorry, no picture...)

I also tried to 3D print two little pieces to help closing the case as Cannikin did. But it was crap. I lost a lot of time trynig this...

I put the screen into the case, and had a test with the hdmi to vga converter :

Got it working !
After a few settings :

Don't worry about the scratches, there's still plastic protection. It will be ok when I'll remove it.
Then I wanted a sound test :

It's working fine, I've tested with the linux command "speaker-test". Couldn't try with a real game because no controller was wired...

So, you may say "the converter will be too big to fit into the gameboy !". You're right. So I plan to hack it, keeping only the pcb/ I know I'm looking for difficulties, but that's fun, no ?

The black wire isn't soldered but everything's working. Should I leave it like this ?
