Looks good Sota. I will be using the Pi3 also.

What will you be doing about the power issues? From what I've been reading, I don't think that battery + 1000c will be enough.

Also, what technique did you use to desolder the ports? It looks really clean!

For today I have soldered some wires to my USB breakout and glued it in place:

Image

Also, I wanted to use an RGB LED as power, battery low and charging indicator and solder connections from the powerboost to the LED, but when you look at the schematic, it doesn't work like that... :

Image

... because if you take a look at LED1 and LED2, they have a common cathode. LED3 and LED4 on the other hand have a common anode.

So I decided to do things a little different. I am going to use an ATtiny12 which checks the powerboost's states and drive the coressponding LED colours from there. Reason I am using an ATtiny instead of transistors is that in the future I might also want to read some status'es from the RPi

Image

I desoldered all the LED's from the powerboost and in their place I will solder wires to the ATtiny later:

Image

For making things easier to access, I soldered my LED to a small piece of perfboard:

Also, I liked the powerstrip PCB made by Helder wermy has also used in the custom parts guide:

I decided to make a basic version of that with perfboard:

I glued the screen and a bit on top of that in place:

Well, so far I did not run into any power issues yet.

I don't know what the technique's are called that I am using, but basicaly I am using 350° Celsius on my soldering station, Stannol Solder Ex (Red) desoldering Wick, a desoldering pump, and a metal prying tool like one of these:

of course, I am a skilled hobby SMD solderer (and I had a job as an information electric where it was usual for me to solder lots of things), so a bit of experience is also playing a role here.

I'm rally enjoying your progress so far. The tri-color led is a nice touch too. I'm seriously debating whether to use an RPI3 after reading about your project. The beefier cpu and inboard bt/wifi would be really nice

Ok, I soldered the external USB port and glued it in place:

Also got all the other connections I need (Audio, Video, Power, USB for Leonardo)... :

... so I can glue the Pi in place:

then I started wiring the LED with the ATtiny12... but I went for an ATtiny2313 instead, so I have more capabilities when I think of ideas in the future :)

Here you can see what it looks like when the battery goes low:

Or when it is okay:

Charging (it is blue):

You have power issues as indicated in the top right corner.

Let me know what you end up doing to solve this.

Interested in this mod with RGB led !
After you have resolved your power issue, could you give us a complete wiring diagram for this power alert led ? Do we really need to unsolder the smd leds or can we solder on it ?

I am also trying to fit a Pi3 in my DMG, but I want to leave my Cartridge slot for SD card expansion :)

That is because I ran off USB only, and soldered a resistor to the powerboost output to get the charging LED to come on. I did not have my battery at the time :)

Let me hook up the battery that's arrived today and show you I don't have power issues at all.
