GIJoe4500's First Build
GIJoe4500's First Build
Well, I guess I might as well start a build thread like everyone else has. Its going to be using a lot of the same parts that every one else uses. And a couple different parts.
I ordered:
white DMG-01 case from E-Bay.
AOI from Helder.
full 3D print kit from wermy.
PowerBoost 1000c from Amazon.
RP0 from Canakit.
HDMI LCD 3.5" screen that "supposedly" has adjustable screen up to 1080p.
Classic color buttons from Deadpanrobot.
16gb SD card from Amazon.
Replacement screen from Dominator.
B103 potentiometer from Amazon.
28.5mm 0.25W speaker from Amazon.
Still need:
battery
safety shutdown switch
I'm sure i'm forgetting something on my still need list. But I'll get it figured out. I'm also hoping to find a battery that fits somewhat nicely into the battery compartment. Finding/building some way for the battery to be easily swapped out, like a phone battery can be. So I can carry an extra for long plane rides.
Once I get all the parts together, I'll post up some pictures. For now, this will serve as a notepad that reminds me of what I still need to buy.

Re: GIJoe4500's First Build
I've gotten in everything I have ordered so far except for the DMG-01 case and the screen. Hopefully those won't be too far away, but it will give me time to practice some soldering work. Need to open up my surround sound receiver in the living room to fix the front display. Common issue with a blown fuse, so that should provide some good practice with the new Hakko FX-888d soldering station.
Re: GIJoe4500's First Build
Haven't posted in a while, but over the last two days, I have been making a little progress on my Gameboy Zero. Figured out a way to cram my screen and Pi Zero in the case, while still being able to use HDMI for video output. Battery compartment will be able to remain unchopped. The sheet metal piece in the case that is up where the game slides in had to go. There just won't be room for it. I will possibly also need to hollow out a game cartridge as well, and permanently glue it in place. There are still a few other pieces I need to shoehorn in somehow.
This is a fun project.
I'm still trying to figure out the best way to get power to my screen. It has a micro-USB input, but I'm not sure if that's something I can easily de-solder and attach wires to. Any suggestions?

Re: GIJoe4500's First Build
After some quick looking after posting my last reply, it looks like the mini-USB would be a pain to remove. But, there is a power switch right next to the USB that looks easier to remove. And since there will be master power for the whole GameBoy, it shouldn't need its own power switch.

YOU ARE A SMART MAN! You can easily put aspect ratios on that screen (I think) and then it will fit the display within the boundaries. Can you please let me know how you go in trying to adjust aspect ratio later and also performance with games!gijoe4500 wrote:I'm an idiot. I can't just power to the switch. Because the switch only works 1 side of the system.
Thanks!
How the heck did you fit it in there btw
Re: GIJoe4500's First Build
That definitely helped! Both of those in that corner are 5v, but in the other bank of connectors, there was a ground. Rigged up some temp wiring just to make sure the screen would power on, and I had success! That's one more thing taken care of.ABH wrote:Check out these

Everything actually fits pretty nicely! I was presently surprised. I'm hoping that all of my case modifications are done, aside from the L+R button holes.JujuPi wrote:How the heck did you fit it in there btw
