Rodocop's 3rd GBZ [COMPLETE]

Post by rodocop » Wed Apr 19, 2017 8:50 pm

Well it's official, I'm starting a new GBZ, I had a bunch of leftover parts, almost enough to build another GBZ. I took the plunge and ordered the last few I needed.

I will be using
-an old original gameboy case
-Screen from gearbest with a 3D printed bracket (HoolyHoo)
-SNES colored buttons (if they fit, I have a snes --controller from China coming, if they don't fit I will use original maroon or black buttons.)
-simple button PCB from ebay
-banggood style Power Boost
-usb or pwm audio, I have parts for both, not sure I want to put a hub inside, so I might stick with PWM.

I will update this thread with progress once I receive a few more parts.

I modified the case tonight. I'm going to leave the battery compartment intact this time. See how that goes. Did it all by hand with knives and sand paper.

Few updates. Still waiting on my button PCB, and my snes colorful buttons. Then I will have all I need.

Got a screen bracket printed (design from @HoolyHoo) and drilled the holes.

I'll remove the bottom posts from the screen bracket because I am putting buttons where they will be located.

These buttons stick out a bit. But I think they will be better than the mini tactile switches. I had these for a while and saw @Lphillimore use them and figured I'd try.

On mine i kept the button lip inside the case to minimise them sticking out and so they couldn't be removed, fall off etc. This meant i had to be careful / accurate with my glue gun so not to glue the button open or closed but it worked a charm!

Yeah. I might try to adjust them. We'll see. I don't mind them the way they are. I need to get some more glue sticks though since I used the last of it tonight.

I thought 1 pack of glue would easily be enough when I started these projects......how wrong I was. Now got about 2 spare packs ready to go.

Last thing you want at midnight is a lack of glue trying to force a pencil down the gun to get the last out of it

Finished wiring the button board to the pi's GPIO's.

Installed the switch, and powerboost and power strip. I left the dmg power port in to block the hole. (I may wire it and use it if I can't find a good spot for the micro usb). I have also wired a micro usb which will likely come out the contrast port or the top of the cartridge.

It is coming out nice.
How do you feel about the shoulder button?
I'm thinking to get one with the button caps just like yours but not sure if its too big.
Good luck on the rest of your build!

They feel good. I'm still on the fence on whether or not I'll recess them more. Like Lphilimore did. I have also considered buying smaller caps.

Either way I like them better than the little tactile switches. But I'll know for sure once I start playing some games!
