Gan's build

Post by Ganreizu » Wed May 25, 2016 9:24 pm

Finally feel ready to start a progress thread.

Earlier progress: Dremeled case to gut out the battery compartment, buttons, and a bit of the sides on the inside of the screen window so that my screen can actually fit as flush as possible with the bezel.

5/25/2016: I wired my teensy today! It wasn't terribly hard given it was my first time soldering anything. I messed up the order of the buttons a bit which took the most time. I also burned myself a couple times. :[ Regardless the teensy functions perfectly first try. Multiple buttons works in notepad and everything.

Next step: Wire the screen up! I have the 5V 640x480 composite screen that cannikin found. White connectors have been removed so i'm good to go, i just need to figure out an appropriate wire length given the position of the pi0 within the case. Once it works then i can configure the screen and remove the white button connector.

Goal date for completion: Before 4th of July weekend.

Looks good. Same color as mine. Really considering the 640 screen now that I see everyone else with one :D

I've said it once already, but man, I love that black case. I'm going to have to get one of those for a future build. Looks like you have all the major components, should have no problem getting it done by 4th of July as long as your schedule cooperates.

It's looking really good so far!

Thank you, i think it's beautiful as well scars and all. :]

I have a normal desk job so the time itself isn't actually a huge problem given that it's more than 5 weeks away which is a long time. The problem i think is going to be figuring out how to get graceful shutdown and audio before then. I can rush ahead i think when the cartridge PCBs are available on kitsch-bent so getting PWM audio and graceful shutdown (and fitting that damn mini HDMI in contrast window...) are the only huge challenges left in my mind.

The pi is already set up and loaded with all the games i just need to get a couple more ROMs for certain systems that i neglected as well as remove emulators that i'm not interested in (scummvm, dos, apple, etc).

Yeah, I haven't even really started because of work. I work in the OR at a hospital a ton, as well as school on top of it. I have all the components sitting in a box that I've drooled over every night, and besides tinkering and thinking it through its just a waiting game for me. It'll happen eventually, but I am almost to the point where I might just wait until Popcorn is done with his shutdown. It'll probably happen all in one weekend when I have to finally get away.

Finally got around to doing the screen. Looks pretty good but hard to read stuff.

Did you complete your build ? Did you use Cannikin's method for closing the case, using the 640x480 screen ?

I have not. ( ) Won't be using his closing method since I don't know how to make that.

Still in the process of making a suitable front case. I keep getting stuck at the "attaching the screen protector" phase. I have one last front shell that I need to drill holes and screen out plus shave down sides for the screen board to fit. Gotta go to home depot and rent a drill. Waiting for safe shutdown to do the soldering on the AIO and everything else.

Incidentally, the person I wanted to show the build to, who I was most likely to see on 4th of July, wasn't at the family reunion. Next possible chance is at christmas, which is DEFINITELY enough time to finish this.
