White GBZ First Build

Post by MegaLoop » Sun Apr 22, 2018 10:57 pm

Got a little impatient waiting for Kite's board so I took a go at doing a Zero. Still a work in progress but got it together enough to close it up and test it out. Big thanks to everyone here that's made my childhood dream of having a handheld color console come true.

Tried to stay away from the evil thermally activated adhesive as much as possible but it's in there nonetheless...

Components:
-White DMG Shell
-Zero W
-Gearbest Screen
-Banggood Powerboost
-Cambles Safe Shutdown
-Hoolyhoo's Screen Bracket
-Soft tactile L/R Switches
-2500mAh Battery
-3 Port USB Hub
-Glass GBZ screen surround
-tinkerBOY 2.1

Bells and whistles:
-Components mounted with acrylic and polycarb sheeting
-Front and back shell separable with jumper connectors
-Power and L/R only on rear - all other components mounted on front shell
-Kill switch for battery inside battery compartment

Still to do:
-Populate power port with either a charging connector or an LED for boost status
-Fill cartridge slot

Nice and clean! 👍 You might want to use this bracket next time by sixteenbit.
Yeah this is a bracket based on HooyHoo’s that I added a few things to keep everything in one case. https://www.tinkercad.com/things/79roQf39c1O
New! tinkerBOY PowerSwitch v1.0 with Safe Shutdown

Thanks, that bracket looks great! I actually noticed it in other builds but didn't pursue it.

Was actually going to make a clear acrylic bracket for a clear case but quite honestly I got a little impatient and had to modify the case more than I wanted to show in a see through so I used what I had on hand(hence the Adafruit battery and use of hot glue). What can I say, I want to game as much as I want to build, at least now I can take my time on the next one and that was kind of the purpose of this build.

LCD board would sit better if screen wasn't rotated 180 however screen brackets with button wells don't allow that. Was a little nervous putting a bend in that ribbon but it's working. Still happy with how it turned out, plays well and I learned a lot!

That's the same AIO board that I have in my first build, how did you setup your wiring for the buttons (XYAB Start, Select.... etc). what is the diagram?

Here is a diagram on Tinkerboy's website:
http://www.tinkerboy.xyz/how-to-wire-th ... ata-cable/

Really all you need is a micro USB male into the board and solder to the contacts to the Pi or USB hub. On my build there is a USB hub under the LCD board(you can see the edge of it just to the left of the ribbon cable).

Additional diagrams for the board here, in case you need them:

You just need a micro usb dat cable to connect to the pi.
