Well, 19 complete now.
This one is using the gearbest 3.5" screen, pi zero W, and a glitch'd gaming common ground PCB.
Other items:
USB audio, headphones, speaker, and volume wheel
ADS1015 for battery monitoring with hoolyhoos mintybatterymonitor script
Dark purple shell, and black buttons, and screen glass all from Retromodding
3D printed black cartridge
3500mah battery, with micro USB charge port in the old EXT port (no external USB on this one, since I used USB audio and did not think it necessary to add a USB hub just for the external USB)
Green LED in the old DC port, which will illuminate when the battery is fully charged.
Generic power boost used in this one.
I really like the color combo on this one!

Any inside layout pics? I'm considering going the common ground route(I'm cheap) but I'm a bit concerned about ending up with an overstuffed Nintendo burger oozing wires and hot glue

It's hard to get the inside super clean. Mine are usually okay. But I've seen cleaner for sure. It's all about wire management, and placement of parts. Here is this builds internals.
I could have cleaned this up a bit more, or shortened a few wires. But it closes nicely.

Yeah, in the pics, the left side is a USB sound card, right side is the ADS 1015. those spaces are normally empty, so it's handy to be able to use them for something.

Dont you get interference in the sound output?

Not that I have noticed. All seems well to me.
