Game Boy Color PI Zero

Post by desoudius3 » Mon Mar 04, 2019 6:54 am

- Pi Zero W
- 2.4 inch SPI lcd
- 2.5 watt stereo amp
- 680 mAh lipo battery
- 2A lipo charger

from the original Game Boy Color:
- case and buttons
- speaker
- pcb
- volume wheel
- 3.5mm audio jack
- ON/OFF switch
-

coming in from shenzen:
- 850 mAh or 1000 mAh lipo
- i2s audio module
- new case with buttons and screencover
-

With minimal case modification in mind, i tried to place the lcd between the case and the original pcb.
The screen beeing 1 mm too thick for a nicely closing case, i had to trimm the front cover.
Now the lcd is just under the screen cover.

Half way down i decided to trash the Pi Zero and switch to the Pi Zero W.

The Game Boy came without its battery lid, with a little bit of trimming inside, a bigger battery will fit.

I managed to put everything on the original pcb, it is a bit messy because audio and usb are not wired up. Im not sure where i want the usb port to go, i would prefer the micro usb port, which is allready used for power. But i would have to connect power in and power out, to get power to the connected devices, and i am sure thast this would light up my lipo charger. Please correct me if i am wrong, which i really hope.
The second option is locating a normal usb A port where the IR blaster screen is resting.
This option is interresting because it has the perfect size, but destroys the nearly original look.
At last i thought about using the Game Boy multiplayer port, and wiring up a special usb to "what ever this port is called" cable.

The 2.5 watt amp fits perfectly under the dpad, where a same sized module was located originally.

Image

The back had to be cut around the pi zero and a little oval hole, next to the 3.5mm jack for the micro B port. To save the orginal status led i had to offset the lcd about 2 mm to the right.
Thankfully i still have all six screw posts, which asures me fully closing case.

this project will be updated. the next things to do:
- usb port instead of the IR blaster screen ?! or usb otg (micro B)
- add i2s audio module
- add modified game cartrige

not to sure about: (because of the clean look till now)
- aditional buttons in the front or back
- remove color from screen cover and repaint for 16:9 lcd

leave me a comment or suggestion

The 2.4 inch spi screen fits just between the status led and the ON/OFF switch, but it is shifted a little bit to the left.
Btw: the status led does not like 3,3 volt, i burned it too death yesterday, so i will be replacing it.
And let me know if you find a custom GBC button pcb, i would like to do a second gbc zero.

I wonder if you could leave the screen just how you have it then adjust the overscan on the right side to fit within the screen cover?

Yes, with overscan i can center it. But retropie is running in 16:9 (also gba, snes ...).
In retroarch i can switch to 5:4 aspect ratio, but with image cropping (which looks awfull ing gba and snes).
