I'm waiting on the same powerboost.

It would be awesome if you could post some pics of your method for wiring please

I hooked up the bat pos and neg to the appropriate pads (clearly marked), and temporary soldered the outgoing wires to the back of the pcb where the big usb port is (power out).
Later ill remobe the big usb port, and only solder to the pcb

It'd be great to see a pic of that when you're done. I'm a bit noobish and this is the bit I'm not looking forward to as its not in the guide which is on the adafruit version

This was just for a quick test, if i wore everything permanently, ill post it here.
The on/off switch has to go in between somewhere too

Today i contacted Banggood because the audio amp and audio usb board had not arrived.
They should arrived within 20 days, other items i ordered there did... but the audio stuff did not.

They refunded me, and i ordered the 2 audio items elswehere.
Hope they arrive but i will have to wait around 20 days again now

In the meanwhile i opened up the USB hub:


And completely removed the screen from the housing:


also received the SDcard board revC from kitch bent:


I hope to be able to start modding the GB case somewhere this week

Ok, so again... i could not resist...

this week i had some spare time, just to myself

so i took out my dremel....
breathe in... breathe out.... ok... lets go!

So... i started out with a big cut-out...


Then continued with all small dremel bits i have to use haha
came out pretty nice




After that i started on the screen. I used the original screen protector to draw i line, so that i have a small ledge left so i can glue in the custom screen protector







After that, i dremeld down the screw post where the L and R button had to go.
I dremeld a bit so that the buttons face a bit "outwards". This makes it easyer to push them i noticed.


I also dremeld al the material of the mini usb break out board, and cut out the hole for it


and then.... it was time... for ..... the x-y button holes!!! o dear....

i sticked on the template for the buttons


I used a wood dril, 10mm. This has a very small and thin centrepoint, and then cuts into the plastic, went OK


And with the custom pcb behind:


Looks pretty good to me

Finally i had just a little time left, and programmed the teensy


after programming, the teensy rebooted, and my laptop recognised it as a keyboard

next i will glue in my 3d printed button wells, and then continue with the guide

Ok, today i got some time to work on this project

I still have not received the audio stuff, so i skipped all that for now, and dit some things i could do with the parts i have

I first started with mounting the screen.
I used the edges i could see inside the GB case to align it, and that worked perfect.

so the test fit, put some little dabs of hotglue on the screen to keep it in place:


As some of you may be able to see, i had to cut donw the top button well, so i could get the screen as low as possible.

after i checked the position of the screen, i glued it in place completely:

As you can see, i also glued in the srew mount i 3d printed from the file that @wermy made

And yes, you have to test fit, and see if the case will close and the bracket will hold:

And.... it did

After that, i mounted the buttons, glued the teensy in place, and the controller for the screen:


Now i wanted to mount the on/off switch.
i screwed up the original switch of the GB trying to remove it.... so i bought some new ones.

Als you can see, the switch needed some modifications:

On the right is the un-modded switch, on the left, the modded one.
I cut down the button, so that it fitted in the case, i cut away the contacts i do not need.

Then i glued it in place (and yes i first checed placement so the switch goes fully left and right)

As you can see on these photo's, i also wired the switch up. Since i am using the alternative powerboost (from banggood), it is wired differently, but this should work (cuts the power from the lipo going to the powerboost, to charge it must be on, but the pi can be shut down before charging. This way i do not have any drain on the lipo)

I then glued in and wired the micro usb port for charging:

I tried to position the powerboost in such a way, that i could use the micro usb port of it directly, but i could not get that positioned right.

On the powerboost it has 2 nice pads you can solder on, to hook up a micro usb port for charging.

Last (at least for today), i glued in the tactile switches!




ok, that's it for now.
Before i go any further, i am going to wait for the audio stuff to come in (USB DAC board and stereo amp) and then i'll finish this

Today the last parts arrived for my build.

The usb audio card:


And the stereo amp!


I also made the cartridge. Because the kitchbent rev c board is made in such a way, the sd card is completely inside, i modded the case to be able to reach the sd card without opening up the cartridge.
I find it a shame the kitchbent board is built that way, I did not see it that well on the pictures.

I know it takes a bit of retro look away, but I'm happy with it.

Ok, so i had some spare time yesterday, and did some small things on the GBZ

First i wired up and glued in the external USB port

the wires are not connected to the USB hub yet though.

After that, i wired up the cartridge reader.
I had some trouble finding the correct pinout... but i found it and soldered all the wires on the reader, and on the the Pi0:


After that i made a power strip, and connected the screen, usbhub, Pi0 to it, put the cartridge on the reader... connected my lipo to the power boost and switched the on/off switch to the on position......


i saw the light of the Pi0 flicker.... the usb hub light went on, so i had high hopes

I turned the gbz around... and....


YEAH it's alive!!!!!

during this test i realized i had forgotten to solder on the USB wires on the teensy... so i removed it from the case, soldered the wires on, and glued it back in place

TODO:

• Wire up udb DAC (remove the bulky connectors first)
• Wire up the audio amp (stereo)
• Wire up the 3,5mm jack
• Wire up the volume pot
• Wire up the teensy to the usb hub
• Wire up the external USB to the usb hub
• Glue in the screen protector
• close the gbz up
• set everything up (screen size/position, font size, load roms etc)
• ENJOY PLAYING
