1st newbie build 3b+

Post by DaRk_dOg » Fri Mar 20, 2020 8:34 am

Greetings to this wonderful community, this is my first build, based off 3b+.

This started as a white/black stormtrooper scheme, but on the process some unfortunate series of events (a butchered white shell for start) and then some more (a broken screen) and then even more (a PSV2000 joystick), changed some of the initial plans. However all of these taught me some valuable lessons and this knowledge will be used uppon my next build.

The (pretty messy) insides:

I love tidy builds (like the ones that VeteranGamer does) but at some point I understood that I am not that skilled and made my peace with that so.. I tried to tidy whatever was possible. I have lots of components that occupy space and maybe that was a mistake from the start :)

Front/Rear/On (handmade) stand:

Parts:
  • Raspberry Pi 3b+
  • RetroPSU by Helder
  • tinkerBOY Controller V3.0
  • tinkerboy DPI Adapter
  • tinkerboy Add-On Board
  • Slim 4 Soft Back Button PCB by HoolyHoo
  • Generic 125054, 4000mah battery
  • Sunon ub5u3-700
  • 28mm 4Ohm/2W speaker
  • PSP1000 joystick
  • SPDT switch
  • Generic clear black DMG shell + black buttons + black button pads
  • Gameboy Color donor cartridge shell
  • 3D printed parts for screen/upper buttons.
  • Game Boy Zero monochrome glass by JellyBelly Customs

Special thanks to the forum/web/discord people:
-SixSixSevenSeven (for the fan script I used and valuable points)
-Helder (for his patience on answering all my silly questions)
-Troff
-Bluup
-tinkerBOY (for quick support)
-Adam from Adam Build's for valuable points and inspiration
-Everyone I forget atm and this whole wonderful community. May you all be good :)

I feel you on the shell, my build was supposed to be a DMG lookalike pocket. Multiple dealings with the shell lead to stripped screw holes, which lead to a black shell instead (which I knicked on the side with a Dremel, but its not noticeable.)

Good looking build. Physically cutting the Pi would be nerve wracking for me more than anything.

FYI, white shell was quite "forgiving" as scuffs and cuts are not that visible. However I butchered rear button holes wrong and I had to restart with a new shell. striping down the 3b+ is not that difficult.. although I had my moments there too
