GameBoy RR (Rolls Royce)

Post by Hivetyrant » Sun Apr 19, 2020 1:23 am

Weighing in at just over 1lb.. This one is equipped with pretty much the most expensive GameBoy options I have and is by far my fav handheld now!

Parts:
  • Machined Aluminum Shell by Boxy Pixel
  • Circuit Sword by Kite
  • Slim Rear Button PCB by HoolyHoo
  • Megabat by Helder
  • Buttons and Screen Protector from Handheld Legends
The only downgrade I had to make was going back to a PsVita joystick from the Nintendo Switch joystick I was using but I'll be putting one of those back in one day.

Another thing to note is that the Boxy Pixel shell is designed for older Kite Circuit Sword kits with the CM3 and not the CM3+ which is a bit thicker in a few places. I had to do some surgery to the large heatsink block in the middle but thankfully it gave me an excuse to buy my own CNC machine (Wife did NOT like this reasoning...)

Here's a sneak peek of the surgery: I'll be replacing the DS Lite buttons on the back soon with either machined buttons or just something with a nice color.

Anyways, here's some more shots:

Just got my shell from Boxy Pixel last Friday. A little heavier than I expected, but looks amazing. Still waiting on the 640x480 screen and then I'll piece it together.

It's definitely heavier than I thought, and for extended playing sessions you can feel it in the fingers! but so far I haven't had to stop playing due to the weight. Plus the biggest benefit I've found is that even when overclocked I never go past about 55 degrees (c) which is huge because after all these parts I can't afford to buy one of the Sunon fans!

Look great! Nice to hear you didn’t need a fan.

Do you have Dreamcast working? Wondering how well it plays, and how hot it gets. I have not been able to get my Circuit sword controls to work with Dreamcast.

I've got the same problem. My shell arrived and I discovered it is for the CM3 and not the CM3+ that came with my Summer 2019 Circuit Sword CM3+ kit. This is really frustrating since I got it shipped to the UK and I can't use it. I also don't have access to a CNC machine.

Is there much difference in the performance of the CM3 vs the CM3+. I really don't want to have to downgrade my compute module, especially when I have spent so much on this project, but I may not have a choice...

Looks awesome! I'm waiting for BoxyPixel to restock so I can get one of these cases myself.

What CNC did you end up buying for this project? I'm curious how big it is and how much it costs. I'll have garage space soon and would love to add a CNC to my tool kit as well.

I ended up going with the standard Shapeoko 3, it's been amazing so far. I haven't really done much aluminum cutting but I know it can do a fair bit.
