Some Quick Questions...

Post by Pbsapeer » Tue Jan 09, 2018 2:06 pm

Hi all,

I've been looking through the forum for some advice / base knowledge for my first build and wondering if someone can review my build and answer a couple of my questions. Im building this first GBZ as a gameboy only version, so no other mods to button inputs.
My Build is as follows:
Raspberry Pi Zero.
JST Cable
powerboost
speaker
volume wheel
gameboy case and buttons
usb pins
power switch
cartridge
headphone jack
breakoutboard
2500mAh battery
button PCB
SD cartridge
gearbest screen
powerstrip PCB
i think the only parts im missing are a glass screen, DS lite gameboy cart. reader and the 3-d printed parts. I can print the parts at work and the ds lite parts im planning to strip from a broken ds lite.

from what i can work out, as my button PCB isnt one from Helder or the Kite board, i need to wire the audio slightly different to Wermy's custom guide posts. from looking at the wiki articles i think i need to follow this Image
however i believe im missing the blue PCB. what part is this? also how much harder is it to wire the headphone socket into this?

i was also planning to wire the button PCB directly to the raspberry pi GPIO pins. I read previously this might not be the best idea. do you think this will be an issue?

Am i missing anything else?

thanks for the help and i find the resources on this site phenomenal.

Hey, that's my audio diagram, based on wermy's original build, glad it's helping some people. That blue board is an adafruit class D mono amplifier

https://www.adafruit.com/product/2130

You can also use this in it's place:

https://www.banggood.com/3Pcs-PAM8403-M ... ds=myorder

That diagram is using the original DMG headphone jack, if you have a different one you will have to change the wiring, this is a helpful thread:

As for GPIO buttons, for sure go that route. It works perfectly and has no drawbacks, and it frees up the pi's single USB port, I always follow this guide:

https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=57

For the glass screen, check out handheld leged, kitcsh bent, and the retropie handhelds facebok page. they all sell nice glass covers. I have purchased 4 from HHL, and they are great.

I also always recommend these, as they are much cheaper than the adafruit powerboost, and work just as good:

wiring diagram found here:

https://www.sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1715

you can also get like 50 JST connectors for the same price as the 1 you listed.

Thanks for the response. Really appreciate it :)

Shame I missed out on saving some money. I’m surprised how fast the cost has risen.

Just had another look at the wiring in your audio diagram- what’s the black box in the index finger? Is that the headphone port? I didn’t notice it on first looking but just saw it there.

You mentioned about freeing up the USB port on the pi by wiring directly to the GPIO pins. What’s the advantage? I can see some people use this for usb sound cards or for Bluetooth or Wi-fi but as I’m using the amplifier and the pi has BT and Wi-fi built in I won’t need it, correct?

Finally I believe I saw you recommend 26-30 awg silicone coated wire. Would you recommend this for both power and data?

Many thanks once again.

Yeah. That is the headphone jack. The pic was taken from wermys guide. (Not my hands).

As for usb. I always run one full size usb to the ext port for keyboard, second controller etc...if you use the pi's usb for sound etc.. you can't do that unless you add a usb hub. I try to keep the builds as minimal as possible. The pi zero w really helps with Wi-Fi and BT. So it isn't necessary for the extra use port. But it does fill in a nice big hole in the side.

As for wiring I've used 28 in all my recent builds. I've also used 26 to 24 for power. But I have also used 28 for power too. Up to you. But I say the silicone coated wire in general is a must have.

Excellent. That’s great. I’ll double check the wermy videos - I missed the part where he wires that.
Think I’ll just stick to the one USB port then. Unlikely I’ll need it for anything else but you’re right, good for a keyboard.

I’ll get some wire for that.many Thanks once again.
