Good news, the new screen came in today. I left the controller board of the screen intact and decided to simply solder the wires of the supplied cable to the pie. Everything worked perfectly.

This time, thinking that I damaged the ribbon wire on my previous one, I was extremely careful leaving it in the same position it arrived in. Then, to take things to the test, I decided to connect my "old" screen to the new controller board to see if it would still give white results and confirm that it's a damaged ribbon cable. Low and behold, it works perfectly too!

This means that indeed I did damage my controller board while soldering the first time. Also, it means that the ribbon cable can handle quite a lot. I have been yanking on it to the point of almost breaking (I think) in a last resort of fixing it and thinking it was broken anyway. That has apparently not damaged it a single bit!

Conclusion, it is not unimaginable to fry/damage the screen controller board.

Thanks for your help guys! I'll most likely be checking in with more updates or questions on my build. For now, I am happy to be able to continue.
