No power strip

Hi all, I'm new to the electronics world and still am a bit confused about the function of a power strip. I live in Australia so it's a little more expensive to get what would usually be cheap PCB components. If I'm not using a power strip (I've seen the one made by Helder very frequently), do I just need to keep my cables organised? How much more difficult is it to get a safe, running GBZ without a power strip? Thanks heaps for your help.
