Composite Screen for Gameboy Pocket ~2.6-3"?

Post by diybrad » Wed Mar 03, 2021 3:33 pm

I'm looking into building a Gameboy Pocket Zero based on an ESP32. I'm looking for a composite video screen that would fit that form factor (original screen 2.6"). It does not seem possible to fit the common 3.5" and the other option I'm seeing on Adafruit is the 2" which would be too small https://www.adafruit.com/category/110

As the ESP32 uses composite video, a SPI or touch display is not an option. Anyone seen anything in the 2.6-3" range that would work?

Check with RetroEsp32 on instagram, I know they were working on a different 2.6 screen, but not sure if completed. Unfortunately anything above 2.6 requires the removal of 2/3rds of the posts on the face and you can't close the case. Gaboze Pocaio (round 1) used a 2.4 which is still available if you aren't dead set on the esp and are willing to use the pi zero.

Thank you, I'll look into that, I've seen their firmware which looks nice. Just wanted to build an ESP32 based device for the challenge I guess, I already have a Pi based GBZ in a DMG.

It looks like I actually have a choice of several different emulators for the ESP32, some of which support ILI3941 based SPI LCDs. So maybe I'm not actually looking for a composite screen. ie:

https://github.com/badvision/esp32_nesemu - seems the best option for a DIY attempt at this
https://github.com/pebri86/esplay-retro-emulation - based around their own hardware but quite featureful

Not seeing a lot of 2.6" screens with a breakout board vs. the ribbon cable. This one looks promising

Would appreciate any links to a screen with a form factor that would work in the GB Pocket form factor

You'll need a 2.6 with a ribbon cable that comes out one of the long sides. If its on the short side it won't fit without a bunch of mods.
