5V Input for New BW Screen Variant?

Post by kryan » Tue Nov 07, 2017 10:07 pm

Good day All. Slowly gathering parts for my first build. I played the BW screen lottery on Amazon and wound up with a screen not documented in the wiki.

Some members have had success with modding this screen for 5V (viewtopic.php?t=3892), however removing that tiny IC surrounded by components seems way above my current skill level.

On the back of the board there are alternative points for VCC, GND, SCL and SDA similar to the red Ebay screen in the wiki that allows 5V there.

So, novice question... Can I route 5V power and ground to these VCC and GND points in a similar fashion? Is there any way to check that this may work? Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Well, it wouldn't hurt to try wiring power to the alt. points. Do that first. You *may* be able to check if those points (the IC points and the alt. points) are connected with a multi-meter. If they aren't, or their seems to be a filter, then you can know that those alt. points don't work for 5v. You can always just go at the IC from the side, heating up all the pins on one side and lifting it with some tweezers, then doing it again. It's okay if you break the IC, because you don't really need it.

Finally got around to testing this with a multimeter. There's continuity between the alt VCC point and the relevant pins of the IC's used in both 5v mods described in this thread. Wiring power directly to that point seems to work without any modifications required.

This one worked for me thanks,
I am doing my first build by the way,
and trying to solve one problem at a time, and in fact I tried all the three solutions for the screen variant at first but none of them worked than I realized problem was powering the pi. When I resolved pi issue, screen worked like a charm and got time to test all solutions suggested on this threat (including redirected ones) all of them worked.
But I ended up this one because of simplicity, thank you

I also have this board. When I connect 12v to the input and probe with voltmeter I only get 3.3v at this pin shown in the pictures above. did any of you test before connecting 5v? I just want to know if its safe for 5v or if I should connect 3.3v from the pi.

Okay so I tried 3.3v to the pin with no success. Screen did not turn on. 5v to the pin works. I have attached the picture to show that this has worked for me too.
