Hello. I have a "problem" with my future game boy color zero. The screen I was planning to buy is no longer available. It was a screen for raspberry 2.5 " (like max used in his topic). I wanted to buy the adafruit one but it's too expensive for me (45$ !).

personally (IMHO), i would not bother with the GBC (at least for a first build)....
especially if your new to this kind of thing, and don't have a clear plan of action....

i've look at it, and i kinda see why not many have been made.....
its going to be a steep learning curving when doing the GBC, and if its your first build i'd strongly recommend against it....

i went to the lenghts of purchasing a
case/shell
custom screen surround
Gameboy Pocket buttons (these are better as they dont have A or B on them)
and other bits and bobs....

but got turned off from the build (once i started to place things in case/shell)....

have you actually looked at the screen size.....

its has one of the smallest screens in the Gameboy range (and this is one of the biggest stumbling blocks)


Standard GBC screen surround






Along side a 2.2" SPI screen






Along side a 2.4" SPI screen









neither of these screen are a perfect match (leaning more towards the 2.4")
but even with the 2.4" you wont be able to use the whole of the screen, as the GBC screen opening is smaller
(meaning you'll have to try to mess with overscan setting for it to fit into the little window)
which means the 2.8" you've bought will have to be adjusted to fit the screen surround opening (or just scrap the surround)


with space already being limited.....

you also have to bear in mind, the larger the screen the higher the probability you will end up sacrificing the top screw posts (having to come up with a solution for that issue)


if you manage to get the screen sorted, then you have the other issues to contend with....
Button PCB
Battery Placement
Sound
Cable/wire management (a lot of wires if the screen and controls are via GPIO, a suitable gauge needs to be used)

normally i would say go for it....
but for a first build, you may end up wasting money on parts that you wont use or wont be able to use

at the end of the day, its your call
(but theres a reason why there aren't many GBC builds out there)

Thanks for the long anwser. In fact, cutting the platic to put the 2.8" screen is what I wanted to do on the first place. I'll not use this black protection with the game boy color logo. I also will use a "fake" empty game boy card to gain some space, cut the pcb to only have the buttons and use tiny wires (and of course cut some plastic in the case).
And I already buy anything I need (they're on the way) so it's too late. I'm gonna see if I Can fit everything in the gbc and if I can, I'll start and if not, I'll do an another project (maybe à Nintendo Switch like with a 6" screen ? idk)
I want to do a gbc and not a GB "classic" because I'm nostalgic from this one. Having a GB "classic" zero doesnt attract me at all sadly

Also, do you have a way to cut easily the plastic ? I try to warm my cutter but it doesnt work so well...

Yes. I think this'll be my solution if I can't fit these things in the gbc : make a "raspeberry switch". I'll buy a raspberry pi 3 and a 5" or 6" screen and keep my rasp zero (5€) and my screen (8€) for maybe something else. It's not a big money loss. And also, I bought some components in batches (5 or 10 copies) so I think I'll do that : start with the switch and later, make my gbc zero...
I assume that this picture is good for the raspberry 3 too (except for where to weld ON the raspberry of course)
