Powerboost alternative?

Post by Arisa » Fri Feb 01, 2019 12:04 pm

Hello :D
Soon i want to build a GBZ for my son. Here i will post the questions i have and hopefully some of you can help me

My question: im searching for a alternative powerboost for the eu market. The adafruit one seems for me a bit expensive (except you say its absolutel worth it and cheaper ones arent worth it) and the shipping cost of the gearbest powerboost from tinkerboys shop is to high.

Ive searched some powerboosts, i dont know if they are compatible. Maybe anyone give an oppinion?

I dont get it, you want to create your button pcb, or you want to know where to wire that ground pad?
For the 2nd option, just wire it to any ground around your build? on the pi, on a teensy, on the ground breakout..

If you are building you own, each button needs to be connected to ground. Those boards are all common ground, so the way they are designed, each button is connected to ground already, and that one pad labelled ground will just need to be soldered to the pi (any ground on the pi).

Also. Why not just buy a simple pcb, they are dirt cheap. Like 7$.

Also, I have a large amount of basic pcbs like the one in your pic. If you're in Canada or USA I can mail you one free of charge.

Thanks!
I want to build my own pcb board because i want a smaller gbz and i think custom pcb do waste less space. Lets see, i will post everything on this board, soon..

Personaly, i dont recomend none of the above.. I have tried the 1st and didn't work for me.
If the 2nd option works (and IF really works) its fine.
The 3rd is big

check these, they work great:

just curious, what was the issue? i bought a few of these too, but i wasn't sure if i wanted to try using them in a gbz. i am putting one in a little bluetooth speaker i'm also building though, and it seems to be fine in that.

the odd thing about it is that it takes a momentary click button to turn on and off, instead of just cutting the power or using a switch. it's one click to turn on and two to turn off. so that doesn't really work well in the gbz, or at least i haven't been able to picture a good set up. it is very small though (but maybe that's losing some necessary stuff? i don't know)

the neat thing about it is that is has battery level led indicators built-in, but that's the only leds available also, so no green/red/yellow, for power, charge, full.

When i tried it, and used a jumper wire instead of pushbutton, the voltage i get in bat terminal (when trying to charge the battery) were around 4,6v, and the output never above 2v.. So when i saw 4.6v in charging terminals to the battery i immediatly aborted its use.

A also build bluetooth boombox's and i used other charging modules for the 5v boombox's (although i prefer 12v battery boombox)

oh crap. good catch. i just tested mine and it gets the full current from the power supply to the battery. i'll have to think about that... i have a bunch of tp4056s so maybe i can stick one of those with it.

Yeah, i recommend always double checking those charge/boost modules, and always use protected batteries (BMS) when testing.
