Alternative to the PCM2704 for audio?

Post by BowmarDafty » Thu Apr 11, 2019 4:43 am

Hello!

We have a build on the go (gradually) and our PCM2704 just broke on us sadly... the contact points on the USB side are gone.

Is it worth getting another? Or are there any alternatives that would be a little easier to wrangle?

Our audio setup is based on this map below...

You could get another. You can also drive a speaker and headhpones direct from the PAM Amp you have there using the PWM method. However, PWM audio is not nearly as nice sounding.

You could also consider swapping the PCM and PAM out for this i2s amp. It's what I use in most builds now.

yeah, i'm currently a fan of the i2s method. much better sounding (but not a very wide response range for the volume wheel).

the biggest downside is that you need access to the pins it uses on your gpio -18, 19, and 21 - so if you're using those for something, i don't think it's an option, but there might be some alt functions somewhere else.
