How to add controls not included on PCB?

The PCB I have is one of the ones with six buttons on the front. It has small openings for L1 and R1, but none for L2 and R2. I’d like to add L2 and R2 using two tactile buttons through the screw posts on the back. or maybe even have the L1, L2, and R1, R2 on the back, and have the six buttons on the front be like a sega genesis controller.

Would this be possible? Could I get this to work even if there are no openings on the PCB itself?

Yes you can. Simply wire L2 and R2 directly to whichever device will control your buttons. In other words, your raspberry pi through retrogame or through an arduino. Either way, just make sure to add in the coding for those extra buttons.
