Or, maybe a way to use it without a potentiometer? I'm sorry about all this, but a "Ghost" Radioshack left me empty handed. I could tell you the story, but I don't think anyone cares.
Have you tried the config file edits to include the PWM Audio?
Have you tried to increase the volume in the emulator itself?
Have you tried connecting the Pot1 to Pot 3 and Pot2 to Pot4?

The Pot you can try to hook up the left pin to Pot1 and middle leg to Pot3 and the right pin to GND, see if that works if the above has been tried already.

First Order Boards might have control issues because if no analog stick is used the controls can be random. Flashing a new code without analog stick support will fix it, @wermy is trying to fix this in the code.

If anyone has controller issues( in game and menu controls) let me know and I'll post a guide to flash the atmega with the code.
Would this apply to having no control at all? For the USB hub and Atmega to work, does anything need be connected besides the USB hub? I wanted to verify the board was working so I wired the hub up to my pi and plugged it in. It boots into emulation station but I have no control. Or will it not work with usb power plugged in this way?

Pic below.

The code is ready, it is on the repository already though by the nature of the keyboard, you can't use analog joystick.. You could though you'd loose the fact that's analog..

Just download it and add it as a library on arduino then you'll find everything in the exemples :)

Im super confused - So before i wire this board up i need to re-program it or flash it or something? Im not using a joystick just normal controls. Sorry, just new to all this. The wiring and soldering and all that i can manage but flashing and arduino and adding code files im having a hard time understanding.

I don't think the Pi has enough juice to power itself and the board and screen, you will likely have to throw the Powerboost or it's alternative into the mix. Have power from the Powerboost feed the 5v and GND and the Pi feed it the D+ and D-

Yes you will need to reprogram it if not using the Analog stick, I'll have a guide up soon and it's not that difficult.

A quick and easy fix to the Analog Stick issue is to use a 0.1uf Ceramic Capacitor between GND and the X and Y Axis solder holes like the image below and no reprogramming needed!:

Sounds good! Thanks for the quick fix. I'm going to wait for the guide just so i can learn it too. Just out of curiosity, im using a mac with the Arduino software that i got here https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software. Does it matter that im not using a windows pc? Any place you recommend for a dummies walk-through on this stuff?

That does not matter, as long as your FTDI chip has a driver on your OS you will be able to use it

If you follow the instructions in the link at the bottom of the First post in this thread you should have the option to choose the SparkFun boards, choose the options like the image below and don't forget to choose the COM Port.
