GBZ Price

Post by Lphillimore » Mon Apr 03, 2017 11:52 pm

So this seemed like the most appropriate place to ask this question...

How much are GBZs worth and what should they be sold for?

My thinking is that essentially there are 2 main products:

1) GBZ - Pi Zero (+ or - W)

2 GBZ - Pi 3

Everything else, is largely cosmetic with a few exceptions like battery size etc.

If you're anything like me, the first build was the most expensive due to needing to actually buy more tools, maybe making a mistake or two etc.

Now that the kit is quite readily available and there are more and cheaper alternatives (again user preference) such as Leonardo over Teensy, im curious to know peoples thoughts.

Short of a delivery from @Dominator i just finished a build in 1 week at casual pace. While it still takes effort and a degree of skill its much easier IMO than it was firsr time around.

eBay (depending on UK, US, Aus) shows a few GBZs for sale of varying quality and price.

Id estimate an average of about $300 US for a GBZ Pi Zero build.

I'm not looking to mass produce by any means but will likely be selling a couple soon.

8-)

as you say its all on the final product, looks wise...

but i've seen half completeted builds go for around $250 (US) and completed build go for anywhere from $300 to $450 (us)

it boils down to what someone will pay for it, but if the finish is good and doesnt look frankenstiened you'll obivously get the higher end...

the reason i started my build was that i saw one on ebay going for over $300 (us) and thought thats day light robbery (my own opinion), I can build that for alot less (and i was right)

but with the 1UP builds going for close $500 (us) and only really have a better screen (maybe a Pi 3) but the builds are just the same (with the odd screw in the case) .... i think the market will easily be happy with a price of around $350-$400(us) , which is still kind off insane...

i have to agree, i think the price they sell for is crazy!!

and if you do something different, the price goes through the roof http://www.ebay.com/itm/112275201185

i guess the people who dont have the skills to make there own would be willing to spend the cash

That's because the othermod kit used to be insanely expensive to begin with. I think it was like $150 or so just for the main PCB. as a contrast, there's a guy on the C.H.I.P forum doing essentially the same thing but for a C.H.I.P. (obvs) and he's charging $35 for it with all the components soldered on(basically cost price. he's stated he's deliberately not out to MAKE money from them just because he doesn't want to deal with the tax side of things...)

oh and it was Mr. Othermod's actual prototype for V3... ;)

yeah that was the page i used to get the ebay link :P at least he set it off at $0.99 and let it bid up. it does make me chuckle when i see them pop up on ebay asking $500 when it looks like the holes have been cut with a hot soldering iron and the case doesnt even close

Well that's to do with just using the standard headers and case. If you were to desolder the headers it would be a bit more stealth. Well I'll find out when I eventually get mine...

Edit: here's the very long thread about it. Should be getting one soon...

i guess it makes it easier having all the LCD pins broken out into the headers as well as everything else. Would be easier to do with a compute module and all its gpio goodies..... this is where i end up dropping a hunk of money on a compute dev board :P

I've sold both of my GBZ for 400usd each but that's mainly because I made sure they were 100% completed that means making sure that the case looked good.

I'm actually going to build a third one but I using kite's board this time we'll see how that goes.
