Video Out of GBZ on Kite's Board

Post by starmagoo » Mon Jan 08, 2018 2:54 pm

In the post https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php ... 630#p51799 I asked how to get the video signal out of the GBZ. HDMI is difficult because the on/off switch is in the way. Is it possible to use S-Video Composite pins? The way you can see it here:

I'd appreciate a hint.

Config wise
Make sure the hdmi_force_hotplug is NOT enabled

Software wise
You will need to run something to clone from DPI to Composite, I'll be releasing an app in a month that will do this however you can search for "gertCloner" which will do it (albeit with some caveats which I have already fixed). If you don't use this you will see a black screen only (like it looks like it's getting a signal, but it is black)

No hurry. I ordered parts from Aliexpress yesterday and today and the shipping usually takes a while. Meanwhile, I'm looking at your tip on "gertCloner".

You have identified the composite video out (this is composite, NOT "S-Video") which is correct, it's up to you how you want to make it out of the GBZ.. I'd recommend you get a 4pin 3.5mm headphone jack, drill a hole where you want it to go, and wire it up with composite and L and R audio from the headphone jack on SAIO (the solder points on the inside). I'd recommend you do it the same pinout as the Pi3, because then you can use the Pi3 video out cable to connect to a TV
The recommendation with the 4pin 3.5mm jack is brilliant. :D I'm gonna try this. However, I also ordered a composite (sorry for the mix-up with S-Video ;) ) connector. I wanted to get the video signal out of there and get sound from the existing audio jack. I will be reporting!

Thank you very much.

Short question: Kite you mean these solder points for Audio L & R?

Ich habe folgende Komponenten bestellt:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10PCS-L ... 0.0.lbFbGF
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/10PCS-3 ... 0.0.lbFbGF
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1Pair-R ... 0.0.lbFbGF

I ordered two different headphone jacks because I'm not sure which ones are better.

Nope those are the speaker outputs and cannot be used for headphones..

I'm referring to the legs of the 3.5mm audio jack, you can see on that image to the left of the speaker is the 3.5mm jack.. it has 5 solder points, I'll show you tomorrow which ones you need to use :)

Could you briefly explain which solder points I need to use?

I numbered them consecutively.

Here you go:

Image

NOTE1: When used as above, the audio you receive will be MONO SUMMED in both channels. In order to get STEREO you must put 'something' into the headphone jack. This is because internally the jack has some contacts that when something is inserted, it 'disconnects' from the amplified (which is 'on the line' converting it to MONO). You could use a spare audio cable (nothing connected) or headphones.

NOTE2: As wired above, audio will also come out of the speaker. You can do the button combo to MUTE which turns off the amp, therefore you'll still get sound but not from the internal speaker :)

NOTE3: It may be better to have a separate jack (as you are doing) for VIDEO ONLY, and to use the original headphone jack really as a headphone jack!

I got the last parts today. Is my presumption of the points red, white, video and ground at the Audio Jack correct?

1. GND
2. Red
3. White
4. Video

Your best bet is to plug the cable into that socket, and use a multimeter in resistance/continuity mode and probe the pins :) From your diagram I would assume that is the logical order, but nothing beats testing with a multimeter!

Thanks Kite for you help. Now I have soldered everything together like it should be (I hope so). Audio is working but no Video. Maybe there is a lot more work to be done like you said? Do i ned to clone from DPI to Composite? How do I do that?

It currently looks like this:

That's what happens when I plug it in.
