Kite's SUPER AIO Build - Power Issue

Post by gelu_freza » Wed Jan 24, 2018 9:15 pm

Hey there,

I am close to finalizing my build but there seems to be an issue with the power button/battery. For some really strange reason, if I slide the power button to the ON position, nothing seems to be happening; yet if I were to hold the MODE button, the gameboy would come to life. The wires don't seem to be reversed so I'm not quite sure what the issue is. Please check the video below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSKsKyFh-1o

The battery also seems to be an issue since it is not being recognized. How do I go about checking it? Any help is greatly appreciated since I'm currently stuck.

Thank you!
Gelu

Please have a look at your battery, the red wire (which is VCC) goes to - pin of the JST connector and GND goes to +...

Thank you! I just noticed that the wire coloring was backwards:) Do you happen to know why my ON/OFF button is not powering on the gameboy but the MODE button does instead? The wires definitely don't seem to be backwards in that case. One thing to note is that the gameboy powers on while I maintain pressing the MODE button. As soon as I let go, the device goes into shut down mode.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Thanks,
Gelu

Can you check the 6pin cables to make sure they don't have a pin swapped or something strange like that? Also inspect the connectors on both ends of the PCB to see if there are any bent pins inside the connector.. you could try swapping the 6pin used for audio to see if that helps.

With the SWITCH OFF, but the MODE PRESSED, does it boot and if you let go of the button does it instantly power off or does it take a few seconds?

Hi Kite,

Thank you for your response! To answer your question, if the ON/OFF button is in the OFF position, the gameboy does not power on regardless on pressing the MODE button. Once I flip it to the ON position, the gameboy only turns on if the MODE button is pressed. If I let go of the MODE button, the gameboy goes into safe shut down mode soon after. There is a video I posted in my initial post if you want to see it in action. I wonder if I should just take the 2 buttons out and re-solder them? Would that solve the problem or is it more complicated than that?

Let me know what your thoughts are and thanks for taking the time to help!

One thing i can see is that the power switch is wired backwards so that 'on' is off, and vice versa. The two wires are meant to be one in the MIDDLE and one on the RIGHT SIDE. See pics here: https://github.com/geebles/Super-AIO/wi ... ODE-Button

With the back board removed, putting tweezers or a bit of wire in the "PWR SW" holes at the top of the board, does that turn on normally and safe shutdown ok when removed?

Hi Kite,

Thanks again for your response. Yes I did notice the switch was reversed but it does not bother me at all. The functionality should be the same. In terms of the board, it has been tested using the tweezers and everything works as expected. I have also used the "TESTER" mode functionality of the retropie to make sure everything is proper. I have actually requested your services for soldering the raspberry pie on the board and I don't see any issues with it. The only next step I can think of is to resolder those two buttons and hope for the best.

I'll try to find some time later this week. I'll keep you updated!

Thanks!

When in TESTER mode the behaviour is slightly different, in that it won't shut down by itself. It will also tell you the power switch state.. if you have the switch 'off' and press the MODE button it will insta-kill it. Does it report the correct GPIO ON/OFF state when in TESTER mode?

I would get a multimeter in continuity mode (or resistance mode) and UNPLUG the little 4pin connector, and probe the pins.. for BOTH the mode and switch, when OFF/not pressed, it will show no continuity/OL resistance, and when ON/pressed it will show continuity/0R resistance

Verify that please :)
