[SOLVED] Is it safe to use fast chargers?

Post by Siniko » Sun Jun 10, 2018 2:47 pm

I am sorry if this is a noob question but is it safe to use a fast charger on Kite's Circuit Sword? I am using board 1.1E and I usually charge via my laptop. As it is not always on I was wondering if I could use a cellphone charger in it's stead? Both chargers pictured (show spoiler) has an output of 5.0V - 2.0A. But the fast charger has an "or" of 9.0V - 1.87A and indeed it charges a phone faster than the regular one. Thought I'd ask first than risk blowing up my CSO.

Any replies would be much appreciated.

I haven't tried therefore I wouldn't risk it if I were you!

I have set the USB C power resistors to only request 5v, so in theory it will work fine .. and the charger only charges at 1.3-1.5A anyway, so it won't make it charge any faster :) more power will not adjust it as it is fixed at that max rate. Phones are very sophisticated in terms of charging circuitry in comparison to the CSO!

If you do plug it in, please let me know the outcome!

it seems the right one can detect if your are using a fast-charging capable Device. It is not going to deliver 9V to your GBZ because it won't "notify" that it is capable of fast charging

Keep in mind that those power adapters should deliver power to any Device which is charged via USB.

I thought devices "request" how much power they want and won't take extra. I suspect if you use a fast charger with the CSO, it will still charge at 5V.

Indeed, the CSO does not have the chip to 'negotiate' the higher voltages so should be safe. The resistors are set to request 5V 3A if available. It should all be fine, I only say otherwise because I haven't done it myself so don't want to give bad advice

Those are the magic words :D .

If you have both chargers on hand - I'd just stick to the 5.0V - 2.0A (regular) one if I were you. Though in principle, the "fast" one should work flawlessly as well.

Also, be wary of bootleg chargers which are almost indistinguishable (yes they look the same) to the legit ones. These clones often malfunction and they could be a potential fire hazard.

Stay safe!

I guess I'll just go with the regular charger for safety's sake :D And yes, I own both chargers and they are "legit" ones as they came in the box when I purchased the phone(s).

Thank you for all you replies.
