Overlay/HUD constantly on - Buttons not responding (Update 3)

Post by Deen » Sat Nov 03, 2018 7:39 am

Hello there,

I used the search function already but didn't found anything useful.

After booting up the board, an overlay shows up and stays there, no matter what I press. In the wiki is written, that the mode-button would be pressed constantly. I can say that the button is "loose", not beeing pressed and other "mode-functions" aren't working aswell.

Before assembling I tested the board and everything was working just fine. Capton tape is used, but as you can see this time the case isn't even closed up and the problem is still present.

Thanks for you awesome work and hope you can help me with a simple solution :)

(Don't look at the display edges... xD still the prototype case till I got the right one.. just couldn't wait to test the board... :P)

**UPDATE - not solved**
So I disconnected the backboard/powerboard via the flatcable and turned on the board via the power button. Problem still present. Overlay showing up after booting while in a retropielogo, before loading up emulation station.
A new installation/micro sd didn't solve the problem either, using "retropie-4.4-rpi1_zero_CSL_20180927-163519.img".

**UPDATE 2 - not solved**
Just saw there's a message written while starting retropie "read only mode, sorry start with..."

**UPDATE 3 - not solved**
While discussing the problem with a friend we came up with the idea, that the mode button might be broken and without connecting the power bracket to the rest the system might get a "always on" signal, like if the mode button were pressed continouesly.
Soldered new mode button to it, but still the same problem :(

I'm glad for any other ideas you guys have. Still hoping it's a software issue tho.

Hi,
If you remove the back board connector (FPC) and use the on board POWER button (you'll need to keep it held in order to keep it on) does the same thing happen?

EDIT: Whoops looks like i didn't read your message fully, let me re-group my thoughts and reply again!

Yes, I disconnected the board with the power switch and the board with the back button connectors and volume wheel on by the flat cable (FPC).
Pressed and held down the onboard power button.

With everything off, can you use a multimeter in resistance mode and put the probes either side of the on board buttons. Could you then also do the same with it ON in voltage mode

Sure, but later this time at around 7pm.

If I understood right first everything turned OFF, multimeter in resistance mode and hold probes at the spots in the attached picture. Secondly power the board up and do the same in voltage mode.

-------
Another thing which is in my mind. I documented the whole process and I've recorded a clip right at the beginning after I attached the raspberry pi0 to it. It booted up right without the overlay constantly showing. Now when it boots up, under the retropie logo is this message written "read only mode, sorry start with..." and the overlay is shown constantly. Maybe just a software issue?

Correct :) that's a bit strange, do you have the screenshot? Have you tried another SD? You could plug a USB keyboard in, toggle the EXT-USB switch, and then press F4 to drop to shell and try to touch a file or something (to see if it really is read only filesystem)

Screenshot taken from the video, just showing that there is no overlay like in the picture in the opening post.

Also used two different micro SD cards.. will try another card reader later.

Friend of mine said the same, plus getting into the terminal doing "cd /RetroPie-Setup" "sudo sh ./retropie_setup.sh" and reset the permissions.

The image downloaded has all working permissions anyway so if anything has changed the FS to read only then it will be corruption or a bad SD. Do you have a picture of where it logged/said about the read only? Did you upload the video because I can't see it on your post? :) I've not run the setup script before so not entirely sure what it will do! But something like `echo "test" > test.txt` if that returns you an error then you have a read only filesystem which is is something SD related!

Also, could you get a close up picture of both sides of your soldering

Nah, will make one later. But it's written at the start up unter the retropie logo for a second or so...

I just uploaded screenshots of the video where you see the keyboard configuring screen. At this time the overlay is now shown on top. Aswell another picture with the emulation station logo. Also with overlay right now.

Of the Raspi? Sure, will make one later.

Thanks for your support :!:

Something inside me mumbles, that it is the sd cardreader which is faulty...
