LED C43 is dead - impossible to charge GBZ

Post by Kayumba » Wed Apr 17, 2019 10:53 am

Hello Kite,

When I soldered a wires to PWRIN vias I accidentally damaged LED C43 (see on the picture).
Now I can not charge anymore my Gameboy by using USB-C.
Even through the PWRIN vias its doesn't work any more.
Its work only through my battery.
:?
How can I fix it?
please help.

That's a capacitor, could you remove the board from case and desolder it. It is best to apply solder to both sides and angle the iron so that it melts both sides at same time. Once removed clean the pads on the board up a bit so that there are no shorts. It is not required for charging to work.

All done, but nothing changes.
:(
I desoldered the rest of Capacitor.
But Kite, I found nothing on back side of PCB.
The capacitor is so small and it was soldered only on one side. So I desoldered on one side and clean it.
I alose desoldered the PWRIN VIAS, clean it and resoldered again properly.

After all, i still have the same problem.
No led lights indicator when I put USB-C cable to charge.
Nothing on the screen (no charging indicator on screen).
I think I can only change my battery through PWRIN VIAS, but no led indicator when I try to charging.
When I put USB-C charging cable I can see one led indicator blinks on PCB R6 (see one the picture).
When push on BTN_PWR the R76 (PON) led is blinking.

How can I fix my problem of capacitor? Maybe if I solder a normal size of capacitor it will fix my problem?

From one of those pics, I can see you have plugged the battery in the wrong way round! You have the polarity backwards..

Fix the polarity, and you'll at least be able to boot it up, however you will have already fried the charging portion. I can repair it for a fee, if you're interested please send me an email and we can discuss it

Ok so it's wired to the battery the other way round? That's generally a really bad idea, you can remove the cables from the plastic end with a small knife, lift up the 'tab' and pull out the cable. It'll come out very easily.

With USB ONLY does it boot? Have you tried other USB ports or adapters?

With USB ONLY it's not booting.
I tried other USB ports and adapters.

I inverted the cable with knife and put it in the right way.

Kite,
If you tell me what kind of capacitor is it (capacity), I will try to solder one and maybe it will resolve my problem, no?

The capacitor is not the problem, if you desoldered it. Capacitors aren't generally game breaking so function continues without them.
