Super AIO v 0.6C1 20170716 software issues

Hey all,
I bought Kites SAIO board a while ago and only decided to give it a go the other week. Ive got a pi zero w soldered to it and all the contacts have been soldered on OK (tested each with a multimeter). The versions on the board say v0.6C1 20170716 and the back board is V1.0B 170517.
Issues I am having - A lot of lack of knowledge with the versions of the software and installing the incorrect version. The main issue however is the fact that I cannot seem to get a stable running copy of retropi to boot. I usually get to the controller config stage and then it freezes/crashes or drops to the os where all buttons/plugged in keyboards stop working. If I interrupt the boot before this stage (the only way I've found of doing this is to mash the f4 key when I see the emulation station splash screen) and can use a keyboard there fine.
When it comes to software, I have tried multiple... the ones from https://github.com/kiteretro/Super-AIO, the ones from retropi themselves and followed steps here https://github.com/kiteretro/Super-AIO/ ... lease/saio to install the extra steps.
I then discovered the new Circuit Sword and Circuit Sword Lite. Ive tried the software from the Lite.
What can I do? Is there a specific version of the software I need to run for this board, should I not have used a Pi Zero W, have I messed something up in the install. All the support links in the https://github.com/kiteretro/Super-AIO go to pages that dont exist anymore so I am a little stuck
Any help is greatly appreciated.
