What is the recommended method to update the image on the SD card?

Can we use the update function in the RetroPie menu or update/upgrade from prompt? Should we remove the SD card and write a completely new image?

I am running the first image and wanted to get the benefits of using the latest.

If you are using the first image, you are going to have to flash over it. In the future, you can use the updater in the Retropie menu
