If you have the single row headers form the essentials kit, I recommend soldering the wires to those and then just put the pins into the holes. This way you can always easily change anything until you are sure. If you solder it directly and you made a mistake, desoldering can be a pain.
Just cut those header pins with a knife or pliers.
