Holydohnut's first attempt!

Post by Holydohnut » Wed Jul 19, 2017 4:38 pm

Oh Gameboy Zero... I had such high hopes for you! You were going to have full port access, and a cartridge reader, and so much more! Then the display I bought ended up having a driver board larger than the screen itself! (Despite having no adjustment buttons) Also, like VeteranGamer, I have an aversion to glue so laying everything out was proving a challenge.

Then on prime day, I bought a 3D printer! And I found a great print on thingiverse which is a dummy cartridge which can hold the pi and the powerboost. Given that this was my first attempt, I decided to keep it simple. I also decided to have the powerboost in the battery compartment this time as, well... I'm still not sure I trust my soldering!

The only other thing that's unusual about my build is that I really don't like tack switches! So for the L and R buttons I found some squishy buttons which also happen to fit without needing glue! They work really well even if they umm... stand out a bit!

Other than that, it's yer standard zero! Basic button pcb, powerboost 1000c, 1200mah battery, 99p audio amp from eBay, headphone socket and eBay from the trashed gameboy which also supplied the case. (which I got from the local carboot sale for the princely sum of £1!)

What would I do differently next time? Pretty much everything! I'm not so fussed about not having a usb port, but I would have liked access to the hdmi. At some point, I will build another. But for now, I'm happy to join the ranks of Zero builders, and move quietly on to my mintypi!

And now the pics!

Thanks to everyone who helped with my earlier audio issues and as usual, huge thanks to Wermy for showing us the way! :-)

It's been pinched by my daughter at the moment! But I'll take one when I can. The powerboost is clipped into the battery compartment at the moment, so it just plugs in there.

Ha! Super Street Fighter 2 was the first game I loaded up when the build was complete for just that reason! They are VERY satisfying to use while ramming Chun Li's oversized boots into someone!
