The watermelon.

Post by Holydohnut » Wed Jul 19, 2017 1:13 am

Hey guys. Thought I'd start up a post here to ensure I actually complete the build! Here's where I'm up to so far.

My only issue so far is that I'm still waiting on the speaker and the sound card. Oh, and that I'd REALLY like to finish my gameboy zero first! Which I stared soldering together last night, so hopefully more progress soon!

Bit more progress to report. Not done much as I've been finishing by Gameboy Zero finally! Check the link in my signature if you want to see that.

I've bought a job lot of broken DS's, (various styles) to harvest the parts! Out of this one, I have the buttons, the screws and I thought, the speaker! But it turns out it's still a little too large! Oh well. Only been 3 weeks since I ordered one from China. Surely it can't be much longer?!?

And in the post today came the lipo charger and another pi 0 w! Because everytime I order anything from a pi store, I chuck in a pi. As you can only buy one per order and if I'm already paying shipping... :D

Ha! I did the same with my ds... but didn't fancy reusing the tri wing screws... and yeah bummer about the speaker.

I kinda like reusing the tri wing screws. Gives the project an air of authenticity!

I suppose ideally, if it IS a watermelon, the screws would be better in black. (Pips!) Oh well!

Unfortunately that ds lite only had 3 in it! Fortunately my £8 lot contained four other DS's! So spares are easy to come by! :-D

I know! I was really impressed by that!
Once I've worked out what I'm harvesting I'll let you know what's left. If that's any use, you can have them. I think I've already had my £8 worth!

i still havent found the screws i ordered from aliexpress (i bet i stumble on them just as i finish the build)

but i ordered some screws from sellers based in the UK (quicker delivery)... couldnt find the exact screws (unless ordered from china)

so i opted for these, just for the faceplate and bezal....

Out with the family for most of today, but in between putting the kids to bed and making bottles, I got out a 3.5mm drill bit, a bullet shaped dremel grinding stone and my new set of craft knives, and did a bit of fettling! End result, all the buttons now fit perfectly, and operate smoothly. Wermy said in his guide to make sure you do a good job here, and I fully agree. Sticking/snagging buttons would end up getting severely irritating!

Tomorrow I'm hoping to get the tin drilled and cut. (I really don't get much time to myself!) I really want to progress to getting the pi soldered in as soon as possible, because the ribbon connector blocks on the screen pcb I got are soldered on crooked. And I have a horrible feeling that while it'll work fine outside the case, when it goes into the bezel and gets pulled straight, the screen isn't going to work.

Tiny update, but life will keep getting in the way!

Drilled and cut the holes in the tin tonight. The LR holes are Bob on, the USB isn't bad, but I'm not sure what happened with the power switch! Ended up being far too long! Oh well.

I used a drill press for the LR holes and to make pilot holes for the others. Then expanded the others using a diamond tipped de-burring tool on a dremel, which cut through the tin like butter! A steadier hand than mine could have done a much better job!

Just realised that this picture makes it look a right mess! But I took it before I cleaned the excess paint off. Not sure why, but UK tins have white painted bottoms!
