Rasberry Pi 3 Model B memory Card

Post by Sasherz » Tue Dec 05, 2017 11:58 am

Greetings
I been searching for 2 days now all over the internett, but withough any luck.
I have got my new Pi last week to start a Retro-Media-Desktop-Pi-Box (work on progress on the title)
But when it comes to Memory cards, Im abit confused.
I will allso list what I want on my PiBox

I am going to do a Tripple Boot on this devise.
1. RetroPi
For retro gaming on the pi / steam link
2. Kodi
watch movies and listen to radio/music
3. Ubuntu Mate
For websurfing, minor working

So I would need a 64GB or more card, since lots of emulaters gonna be put on it
So the question comes all down to what memory card reader the pi 3 model b has, and what memory card I need, and how big I can go.
I have no interest in overclocking the reader or the pi

There is Classes 1 to 10, and uhs 1 or 3.
There is no info at all what the card reader on the pi is, if its a U1 or U3.

thanks for all the help and hope I posted it in the right place

I would recommend you the best you can afford...
I’m using only Class10 U3 SD Cards and the speed is really amazing. Go for branded one’s not cheap stuff.

only cards that is UHS in my area is UHS-1
on the internett there is som u3's, but price comparison was rediculess...
A SanDisk 128GB C10 U1 cost about 60Euro
A SanDisk 64GB C10 U3 is a wopin 130Euros.
unless the SanDisk is a terrible choise

so I will stick to the U1 unless anyone can vertify theres U3 on the Pie Model B

To tell you the truth, you won’t notice any differences between U1 and U3 in our usage.
We need fast random reads, while U3 provides very faaaast sequential writes like for video capturing.
I use U3 because while flashing the SD in my PC it’s like a Ferrari

And to really tell you the truth, depending on brands, how you use the system... you may even won’t notice differences between class 6 and 10 because the Pi reader is very limited spec...
But as class10 are cheap, easy to find, and are now « normal » better to stick with them. The price difference is almost nothing.
And when plugged to the PC, it will help.
Also, Class 10 will more likely have better performances than Class 6 but from brand to brand this may vary a lot, and within a same brand, same model, sometimes, the controller is different and the performances are very different.

So it’s like the Russian roulette

I like to know that my card can perform very fast, because maybe the next generation of Pi (maybe revision C?) will have better sd psecs so....

IIRC the Samsung Evo/Evo+/Pro cards were the fastest in benchmark tests, with Sandisk Ultras being slightly behind. And they're not stupidly expensive: https://www.pidramble.com/wiki/benchmarks/microsd-cards

It's also worth pointing out, you may not need a 64GB card. Unless you're installing a bunch of PSX titles, Retropie will comfortably fit on an 8GB card. Ubuntu Mate is pretty small, too. Kodi will probably be the biggest storage hog, so it depends how heavily you'll be using it. But you can also use a USB flash drive for storage, which is faster and cheaper - the Sandisk Fit that was second in the benchmarks above is $25 for 128GB.

Personally I found a huge difference in peformance (not just writing the image but in actual boot up and use on the Pi Zero) between a Kingston Class 4 and Sandisk Class 10 UHS 1 card. Now that maybe due to brand but most likely speed rating. After that I wouldn't use anything less than Class 10 UHS 1 especially since the price difference is minimal.
